Great review. I need to go drive one.

I agree that it looks better in person than in pictures. I think it's a sharp looking car. The performance is extremely impressive for a non-M car. It's impressive compared to 5 year old M cars.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I do three to four HPDE a year, primarily at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Club Motorsports. When I can, I go to Lime Rock and Watkins Glen.

FWIW, the photo at the top reminds me of my e36's technoviolet color so I may order that instead of "arrest me red."

I honestly don't get why reviewers are comparing the new m240i to previous M2's instead of previous m240i's.

Because there is no comparison between the new M240i and the previous M240i.

Having owned an F22 and taken a new M240i for an extended test drive, I think I agree. I was quite surprised.

Maybe I'm old but I agree about those video game dashboards. I ordered mine with standard dials. All the info I need to see is there with a quick glance at the tachometer or the speedometer and then eyes back on the road. If dials are good enough for Porsche, well…

6 weeks would be quite fast. Ask when your production week is and then add 2 months on top of that.

With the complete insane trade-in value we got when buying the M240i it feels like we got it for free so trading it after a year or two will not feel one bit financially irresponsible. Because, yes it should be a really great car.

I actually much prefer the standard dials!

What a wonderful write up. I have similar opinions as this original post, and found my experience quite the same. It's a very practical car for the price from BMW for me.

Me too but when I have HUD as our M240i have it hardly matters since the times I use the instrument cluster nears zero. So while I was concerned before we got the car it turned out be a non issue.

Because marketing distinctions are pretty much bullshit. We pretend there is something special about "M" because that is the distinction we have all been sold - but face it, those days are long gone.

Because the M2 was the best driver's car BMW had to offer and because it reached EOP almost a year ago, it makes sense to compare the G42 with the end of that line.

Based upon my initial impression of the G42, the next M2 has a great platform to build upon. Let's hope they do not install fake fender vents on this gen.

Me neither. Coming from an m340i if you want sportivity both m240 or m340 wont give u what you would expect. These are intended to be just more powerful than regular series.

Confess I was a little upset w m340i expecting it would be as good as an m2c in performance wise but it was not. Even I wondered If It was as fun as my Gti. Forgive me If I mistake here but that was my impression.

Well, i have to admit this car looks WAY better in black. Seems the solution to the M240i's styling issues is matching the black stuck-on bits to the color of the car.

The rear & front ends especially - they look WAY better, downright mean n nasty. The taillights look better, more proportional with the black, too.

The goofy vertical accent behind the front wheel still seems misplaced. Would look much better if it followed the curve of the wheel well or was at a soft angle. Would give the car motion, even when still. In motion that line really looks "off".

Side view is still the best view - it's a great looking car from the side, even with that odd fender accent. Killer hips (how much more flared could the new M2's hips possibly be?!) I no longer feel like the car has to grow on me - I'd flat out buy one if there was a manual, and in black. Or I'd paint the black bits the color of the car, whatever color I bought. I think that is mandatory to help this car look its best.

Congrats to those of you who've bought one, especially if this is your first BMW, or intro to the 2'er. You got yourself one hell of a car, awesome motor, great interior & performance that will keep you grinning ear to ear.

1. In my earlier post when I said the car should be here in 6 weeks, I didn’t mean I just ordered the car. I ordered it back in December.

2. The images in post 34 show the standard dials. They are also the one’s I have on my 2019 BMW 330i xdrive. They are not as classic as Porsche but close enough. And, if at all possible, I prefer the classic look of dials on a sports car versus the video game-like look of some of the modern dashboards, maybe because I’m older. But I certainly understand that many younger folks want/like the new look.

DougMcL does the standard dials and all the iDrive stuff come with Android Auto? Or is it a feature which only comes with the Live Cockpit?

I'm not sure but I suspect that it is only the dials that are different.

G87 M2 hips are wider than those of the G42 M240i.
