injector replacement procedure update

I've been meaning to post this, but keep forgetting. BMW has (again) changed their internal policy on N54 injector replacement with the new part # 13 53 8 616 079 injectors. Previously, it was stated that if any of these new injectors (index "11" or higher) were installed on an engine, that all injectors needed to be replaced with these same injectors.

Now, BMW has changed their recommendation. Dealers are now being instructed that the new 13 53 8 616 079/ "11" index injectors can be installed on an engine with the older style ("10" or lower) injectors, as long as they are on different banks (IE. 1-3 or 4-6). Meaning..... if you have a bad injector on cylinder #6, you could install the new style injectors on bank 2 (4-6) only, and leave your original injectors on bank 2 if you wish.

Why BMW changed their tune on this issue, I'm not sure. If it were my car needing injectors tomorrow, I'd probably still replace all 6 with the latest and greatest -- but that's just me. Now, you do have less expensive options, though.

Here is the updated information I happened to "find" :

In the case of reproducible “cold start” rough engine running with corresponding misfire faults, replace all three high-pressure injectors on the bank that is faulted (1-3 or 4-6) using improved P/N 13 53 8 616 079 with index 11 or higher.

For example, if the engine has a misfire on cylinder 1, replace injectors for cylinders 1-3 if those injectors are not already index 11 or higher.

If the injectors on that bank are already index 11 or higher, only replace the injector on the faulty cylinder.

Use P/N 13 53 8 616 079 when replacing the injector(s).

IMPORTANT: Injectors with index 11 and higher have a different calibration and construction than injectors with index 10 and lower.

Due to this difference, the injectors with index 11 and higher and injectors with index 10 and lower cannot be mixed on the same engine bank (i.e., cylinders 1-3 or 4-6).

Once a bank of injectors is at index 11 or higher, the “bank set replacement” requirement no longer applies. For index 11 injector failures, only replace the failed injector.

Hope this clears it up........

I had this info the day it was released, but kept forgetting to post it. I don't see any other threads devoted to this new info, though, so hopefully it helps someone.

Wow that's good news. If I can't solve my misfire issues at least now I can replace all my bank 2 and not have to do all 6

Yeah I just had 4-6 replaced free of charge. Last month before my warranty expired, I had 1-3 replaced.
