2022 M240i Lightning Lap - 3:03.0 - Ugh!
I always look forward to Car and Driver Lightning Lap results for new models, but they did the new M240i no favors this year. Showed up with used rubber and not even the performance wheel/tire package.
For being such a pig, it faired really well against cars with proper tires. The article says it could have shaved a few tenths with fresh (proper) tires, but I'm banking on more to the tune of a 1-2 seconds. Tires, pads, and brake fluid are the name of the game. Possibly one of the best (hidden) compliments they gave the new M240i was complaining about "excessive oversteer". I included a second article at the bottom with historical figures for comparison. I was hoping the M240i would be a little closer to the Camaro SS 1LE time, but even with proper tires it won't hit that 2:54.8. Queue the evil laughter from my son! https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...lightning-lap/ https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...storical-data/ |

“ its newfound 47 horsepower enables it to start reeling in the 405-hp 2019 M2 Competition down the front straight.”
Whaaaat, with those extra 47hp it’s still 20+ hp down at the crank and with the X-drive losses it should not reel in the RWD M2 down the long straights. Impressive efficiency somewhere… |

If that's the case, then the 2019 M2 would be under-rated as well. So how would the M240i be catching M2 on the straights with less HP/TQ and more weight? Aero???

My theory is that they provided the less performant tires on purpose as to not cannibalize the more expensive M cars past & present while providing a competitive buffer against electric cars. I think this car once setup right will be really competitive.

Had the M240i shown up with Cup 2's on the ZTK's package of 8.5" and 9.5" (instead of the 8.0" and 8.5" with non-high performance tires, maybe even run-flats), we may have seen a 2 second savings putting it at 2:59.96...maybe even low 2:59's? Just between a Cup 2 and a Cup 2R there can be a 1.5 second difference on a 1 minute track, so imagine a hot lap with Cup 2's over a more-or-less performance all-season that showed up on this M240i. Shame on you Car & Driver! For giggles, below are 2:59 Lightning Laps... |
