G87 One Year Review

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I can't believe it's already been one year with my BSM G87, the car has been phenomenal and has greatly exceeded my expectations. I had ordered the car as soon as the order banks opened, not really expecting to buy it. My sales guy simply said order one, if you don't like it, we'll have no problem selling it. So I said F it, why not.
Ordered basically everything with the 6 speed because there's no way I'm not buying a driver's car with an automatic transmission.
A few months later, to my surprise, the car came in. I was literally getting my oil changed on my F87C and my sales guy found me in the lobby and said it's being built as we speak. I actually got excited and the wait began.
It must have been one of the first custom ordered cars delivered as only the HEA cars were at dealerships. Here's my original delivery thread: https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2011109

Fast forward to today, it's been 6200 miles and one year of ownership.

My take:
Exterior styling: I love how the car looks. It's perfectly sized, not too big not too small, just right for my needs. The car looks aggressive in all black and I love the muscular DTM wide hip look. The quality of the paint is top notch. The quality of the carbon fiber roof is excellent, the panel gaps are consistent. You can tell that the BMW Mexico plant is every bit if not better than the plant manufacturing in Germany.
I made styling changes of course because the car needed a lip and the air intake trim looks a ton better in carbon than the bare plastic.
Interior: Talk about a huge leap over previous generation cars. The quality here puts the G87 upmarket compared to my F87C for sure.
The most controversial items are the huge screen and the carbon seats. I actually love the screen, it doesn't get in the way and all of the items I normally would click on are simply a tap away instead of a button. Literally makes no difference.
The seats are worth every single penny of the nearly $10K carbon package. They are supportive, comfortable, and you get to experience the performance of the car without bracing yourself against the door (which I had to do during my two days at Thermal for the M Drivers package). Totally worth it, even though you may look goofy getting out of the damn thing.
The performance: absolutely next level. The way the car rides is miles and I do mean miles better than my F87C and F80. The juxtaposition here is that it is comfortable cruising but with the press of a button the car rides like it's on rails. I said it once and I'll say it again, the biggest upgrade that the G series cars have is the suspension. Don't know how but it's damn good. I'm on KW HAS since the original stance looks like a damn Rav4.
The s58 is excellent in this car. There's no way it's detuned, it pulls very hard mid range to top end. However, i do miss the S55s low end grunt at times but this is a much more linear motor in how it builds power. And it builds power in a hurry. The mid range and top end are mind blowing.
The downsides are the small gas tank and depending on your preference, the attention the car gets. I have people taking videos as I'm driving on the freeway.
Overall, this is BMWs take on a 911, practical sports car and I love mine.

From the perspective of someone with ~100 miles on it after a month of ownership, great to hear a long term POV.

Agreed. I’m 400 miles into ownership and Bumpinjeep has already set my goals for what the car will look like at year 1 (fingers crossed). :Chefs kiss!:

I have 7,700 mi since Dec 1, and I agree with your review. Very happy I decided to purchase the M2 for my daily driver. I traded in a '22 330e which was also a great car for the 16 months and 31k mi I owned it.

I have a Callaway supercharged Carbon Z06, but the M2 is so fun to drive that even on weekends I find myself choosing the M2 over the Z06. I do have the auto in the M2, which I wanted because it's my dd. The auto in this car is excellent and does not take away from the "driver's car" feel, imo.

The standard sport seats are excellent and put the seats in my Z06 to shame (another reason I like driving the M2 over the Z). I hated the big screen in photos, but have come to like it. I do not like the too many apps and too many steps to find/select basic settings. Idrive 7 in my old 330e & my wife's X3MC is much easier to use.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I'm 2,220 miles in and I'm a little over 7 weeks into ownership.

I'm having a similar experience so far!

I appreciate your one year review, having just ordered the 2024 6 speed manual. BSM all the way for me! I feel better already ...

But I must say I avoided most options, especially the pricey ones. At highway speeds do Harmon Kardon speakers really provide superior sound, given road noise? Does all carbon fiber really improve the driving performance? Do red calipers brake better than blue? Does a heads up display really deliver safer info than lowering your gaze 15 degrees for a second to the dashboard info? The option that comes with a track session would be wasted on me. I took several weekend performance driving schools at Mosport Raceway 20 years ago.

Based on my experience with my 2019 M2 Comp, persuading Sirius radio that I really don't want to subscribe to their service will be a challenge. They were extremely persistent last time. A real pest.

But I do appreciate the one year review. I had some doubts trading in the M2 Comp.
