How the fook do you get to the battery ?

It's on the o/s boot area.plenty if trims to remove tho.Sure they're half turn plastic screws.

I know where it is and I know there are plastic screws to undo but there must be a methodological way of undoing/loosening each screw to remove the relevant part of trim ?

Correct.
No disrespect but its straight forward. There are 4 pieces to come out.
Once you take out the first bit, open the roof to half open position and then take out the rest of the trims.

I managed to figure it out, was getting ab bit frustrated with all the blooming clips
