Walbro in bucket soldering issues

Hi , my walbro install seemed to be rock solid , but that was only with max half tank filled.

Everytime I have filled gas , the car stumbles and act weird during startup , only after filling then acts normal again.

But lately I filled tank full and car wont start now , it cranks alot and when fire up only runs on few cylinders.

Im pretty sure this relates to my walbro install , cables from pump was soldered to connector and put shrinkwrap around.

I plan to remove shrinkwrap and replace with some form of petrolsafe sealant.

Anyone else had any similar experience ? Or advice on what sealant to use?

I tried to rev it , warm engine already , and after 1 min I gave up , also some smoke came from engine compartment so I dint want to destroy anything.

Reving was between 3000 and 4500 in attempt to see if it would wear off and run normal like it had done before.

Now car is in shop with fuel pump out of tank.

Bought some Permatex sealant and hope this will fix my problems.

I was able to unpin the connectors on cables to socket and will when sealant arrives , mold some sealant around soldering points and apply 2-3 layers of shrink wrap.

That's odd...99.9% of folks install their Walbros identically. Outside of choosing what type of connector you want, it's just heat wrap covering the wiring end of things. I'm not sure how that would be causing an issue? But electrical stuff is over my head I won't pretend to be an expert there.

Try leaving the cap off and starting the car; maybe the vent hose is kinked/clogged?

Edit: Guess you can't if it's out and in the shop; just seems like odd symptoms for it to be the solder point.

You could leave the wires completely exposed and fill the tank up and it wouldn't cause an issue, your problem is elsewhere.

Any clues to why this would happen only when I fill gas ? Previously I only filled to half full tank , then only little uneven running at startup then fine.

This time with full tank of gas it refused to get back to normal , and the codes of misfire on cylinder 2-3 and later multiple misfires code and fuel delivery amount monitoring not ok.

I also support the theory that electricity would not be conducted inside tank , looking at OEM setup its quite clear.

Im interested in knowing more about possible kinks that can happen when filling.

My pump is not fixed in position inside bucket and was loose when I got it from mechanic , if it happen during driving and later became a problem when ever filling gas. I will drill holes in bucket and secure the bracket holding pump plus the plastic top part that holds the return lines.

My wires I just shrink wrap over again and leave it at that.

Thanks for help so far

Ok , pump bracket secured with zipties , drilled two holes at each location that bracket touch bucket and zipped. With small zipties it works ok for later when inserting to tank , just cut the ziptie flush with ziptie lock and u are ok.

Did the same thing with top bracket holding return lines , here I left lock for ziptie on top.

After putting everything back together car fired up right away.

Will try some fillings 10 by 10 liters at a time to see that its truly fixed.

Again , thanks for input and help.

Had the car for a testdrive , almost forgot how therapeutic this car can be...

All seem to be in good working order.

Even my turbos have come to live again. Empty tank on my Aquamist shut my turbos off.
After filling just distilled water and verified spray after valve , the testdrive and my turbos was back on.

During testdrive I drove uphill on a bridge and during WOT it sounded like backfire once , then turbos stopped working again.

Came home and read of this code.

This to me could be because of the LPFP upgrade or no ?

2aaf is a shadow code that won't cause any issues with the car running. The car senses that something is different with the LPFP due to the additional electrical demand and is giving you a code.

As far as the pump goes, I'd strongly caution you to keep an eye on the fuel line used in that installation as it will most likely degrade over time and with those unions and 90 degree fittings, there are powerful surge pressures that occur at those junctures that can lead to ruptures.

Also, when that pump is installed, with those lines being that tall there is a strong possibility the top hat is smashing them and potentially kinking them.

Do you have, or can you take any logs?

It's unfortunate you're in Norway as the turn-around time would be a killer or I'd sending that bucket to me.

Hi Steve

The pump seem to work like it should now. I will deactivate the aquamist failsafe. I think issues with the aquamist system can trigger problems for me. Thats why I will deactivate the failsafe and drive a while without it and see if problems keep comming or I stay clear of them. The hoses used in my walbro mod is safe with ethanol and solid ,they need a lot of bending before the show signs of getting kinked. and all fittings used are petrol safe , also ethanol.

I will report back later when I have done more testing.

I have cobb AP , but not sat myself into working that with my car yet ,but would like to know how. I have inpa if that could read off anything.

Okay and I'm not trying to scare you, I just don't want to hear about you being stranded along side the road.

You have added a lot of restrictions that will see very high surge pressures. On top of that, the rubber bio-fuel compatible hoses have been known to degrade and rupture.

Here's a picture of a Gates Bio-fuel submersible hose that failed in a couple spots...specs are below. You'll notice it failed right before the restriction. This person was lucky as they caught the failures because they continuously log and monitor things after a couple of previous failures. Consequently they noticed the drop in pressures and investigated before there was a catastrophic failure.

Detailed Description
A Hose That's Fortified, Inside and Out
Ordinary fuel line is designed to handle fuel on the inside only. With in-tank applications, gasoline also comes in constant contact with the outside hose surface, making it vital to utilize a hose that's engineered to be submersible.
Gates Submersible Fuel Line Hose is capable of handling gasoline, alcohol-extended gasoline, ethanols, biodiesel or diesel fuel in fully-immersed, mobile and stationary applications.
Engineered for constant contact with gasoline (and other liquid petroleum distillates) on the inside and the outside.
Excellent for use on fuel pumps in the gas tank (100 psi working pressure).
Fluoroelastomer (FKM) tubed cover resists gas permeation and retards aging.
Aramid Fiber reinforcement-the same fiber used in bulletproof vests and is pound-for-pound stronger than steel.
Meets the SAE 30R10 specification for submersible fuel line hose applications.
Maximum temperature +302 Degrees F (+150 Degrees C).

Manufacturer Information
For the past century Gates has been powering progress as one of the worlds leading parts manufacturers in the automotive industry, working with virtually every Original Equipment Manufacturer worldwide to design products for new vehicles as they are being developed. These strong relationships together with Gates commitment to continuous innovation enable us to offer a complete line of OE quality products for the Aftermarket. From Timing Belts to Micro-V AT Belts, Tensioners and Hose, for both import and domestic vehicles, install with confidence, install Gates.

Bottom line, everything fails at some point, we all have it happen. However, in my opinion you have added a few variables that will contribute to the likelihood of it failing. My recommendation is that if you want to go forward with that design, you change the lines to nylon lines that with high burst pressures and remove as many restrictions as you can.

Either way, best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Steve
