Kicking the tires....JB4 or Cobb
Ok so I am not the most tuner savvy person in the world and would be lost with all the tinkering that some of you guys do. I'd be comfortable just setting it and leaving it with whatever I get, depending on the next mod. Now that being said, I've been going back and forth with the JB4 and Cobb V3 for my '07 335i. Eventual mods would be downpipe, 5'' FMIC (probably won't go 7 since I've seen people have to cut), and of course the charge pipe. I've done research and yes I've used the search tool but I would just like some advice when it comes to spending $500 or $900. I saw the Cobb only has 2 stages? and the JB4 has all kind of different settings right?

I went with Cobb but i have the v.2 one and im satisfied. I was under warranty when i bought it, and i did not want to have to go under the hood to remove everytime for a dealer visit. If price is an issue go with Jb4, if not go with Cobb. I know the V.3 has more features and a much larger more vibrant screen. Good luck, cant go wrong with either one.

COBB is more user friendly, much more to do. easy plug and plug install so its a no brainer. i still see ppl incorrectly install jb4 nowadays lol that is why jb4 is cheaper.
go on the cobb website and browse thru all their maps. The best map of coarse is custom map not the cobb maps. i seen a cobb vs jb4 dyne recently on this forum and cobb was actually faster |

Buy both. Problem solved. Get the best of both worlds.

How about on the fly map switching? Auto tuning, excellent integrated meth control?

I mean technically, if he has the extra money, get both.

Well I probably won't ever run meth, so that is not big to me. I'm just looking to add some more power to the daily to make it a little more fun to drive. I do like the customization capability of the JB4 but I've seen the Cobb have more linear or "smoother" hp/torque curves. I saw one of the sponsers (whether this site or another) has a packaged deal for the Cobb, Downpipe, charge pipe and FMIC for about 1500. might splurge and have a christmas in july

Have you installed it? I saw the JB4 dynos and it looks like they get "smoother" or more linear the more power adders you have (i.e. meth and bigger turbo) which I am never going to get or use. The cobb looks more linear all the way through.

This guy usually sticks to his guns. I've seen setups and guys at dyno days. They have issues with it and it's just one more thing that can go wrong. Just let me change replace things that can't further damage my stuff. Just seems to be a headache and you have to find good tunes, yada yada.

I was just in your shoes too and I went JB4...I think if I had to do it again I would go Cobb, it's just a more complete solution.
However, I made my decision based on the fact that 99% of the fastest cars on here were all running the JB4, so you definitely can't say that it doesn't deliver.

I've run jb4 standalone, stacked jb4 + base fuel map, and now a free flash self tune based on a stage 1 dme file (no piggy). I prefer the last and current setup for my track days and have since sold the jb4. I do kinda miss the additional features but it's worth having the much smoother throttle behavior... Ymmv

Buy both and sell the other used once you figure out what works for you. It's a small investment but it ends the debate of not knowing what your missing.
Cobb is easier to install, more user friendly. Just plug into the OBD II and folllow the prompts. JB4 is installed under the hood and tapped into the wiring of the DME. JB4 has many features bells and whistles through the steering controls. Cobb is a flash tune and largely supported as the "go to" for controlling your vehicle. Both make about the same power on a stock vehicle. |

At this point I think "both" has to be the answer. With full 1-6 cylinder logging the JB is a pretty damn functional piggyback. Keeping the flash allows you to relay accurate data to the DME in almost all regards, and properly handle some key tables (fuel, VANOS and related overlap, advance). The piggyback handles boost control directly via the wastegates, and as a result is extremely smooth. You can add in tons of useful features (boost limiting by gear, NLS) as well.
Maybe i'm getting too excited but this is shaping up to be such a quality year for the platform. More fuel, better tuning, more big turbos, at least attempts being made on the 6AT side for big WTQ guys. Woohoo!

JB4, IMO the support is amazing they are always turning out new things, the OFT came out for 499 and terry has free flash maps thru JB4. Its so competitively priced you can save money and get downpipes also (amazing part) if you dont already have. Also if you want numbers just look at all the record cars that are being powered by JB4! so if you want to go fast go JB4.
Also Meth is safe.. people are just dumb.. its not even flammable when mixed. and is GREAT for your engine.
