My oil temp went from 220 to 280 in 3 minutes!

I was running through the canyons today with the sports bikes. It was only about 58-60F up there. I have an early steptronic with no oil cooler. Somehow I think even with an oil cooler, the temps would get pretty hot. It is nothing like the M3, which doesn't run this hot in 106F track temps! Funny thing though...I think I can run through the canyons faster in the sedan due to its greater torque. I ran a few bikes, none of them could leave me, and I was even running conservatively due to the glare I was getting from the sunlight hitting the dirt on my windshield. The 335i has no problems on the drag strip, but running hard on a road course is a whole different story.

Here a clip of one of the runs:

Yup, at the drag strip, it rarely goes above 230F. I would imagine the track environment is where the new M3 would shine.

Why don't you get an oil cooler retrofitted?

Looks like a fun road. That bike was holding you up bigtime though. I have a sedan with the oil cooler installed by my dealer and I have taken a few runs through the canyons near my house and there was a lot more wheel screetching than you were getting My oil temp was well over 280 also despite the oil cooler so I think you are right that you would have seen high temps even with the oil cooler.

I don't find cars canyon running very interesting. Bikes are on thing, they have a little choice of line, but cars have none, you have one line to take. Where is the driving in that?

Bikes do have the advantage of using inside/outside of the lane, and they have a much better power to weight ratio. So to keep up with them, you still have to run at a pretty good clip. Its still fun running through the canyons. With the sun in my eyes today, I tended to hug the center line more than the guard rail, LOL. Most sport bikes are used to running away from most cars.

Here are 2 other bikes that were racing up/down the canyons:

Will a stock car have the same issues or only the modded ones here?

I think about any stock 335i will start running hot in those conditions. But the more power you make, the more heat you generate. I hate to think about what would happen on a hot day! With an oil cooler, maybe it would take 6 minutes instead of 3 minutes..

Again, a N/A M3 would be much more resistant to heat buildup on a race track. But under most conceivable street conditions, the 335i is fine.

On the other hand, when I came to a stop at the end of the road, the temp was down to 230F within 2 minutes.

i would have to agree with you. however, the atm outside at that time was 63 about to rain.. ... that make alot different in oil temp

Unless a rider get their knees touching the ground, he isn't working at it too hard. I'd say the guy you were following either was either a novice or intermediate level rider. Or perhaps just had one too many falls and is now taking it easy. I'm a rider myself and it only took me a few spills to learn that pushing hard (especially when a car is closely following you) is a bad idea.

That would freak me out to be on a bike with a car that close behind me.

Mulholland. I was kind of taking it easy on many of the turns because I just couldn't see! I ran one guy on his R1 (with my M3), all the way up the higher speed cyn, he was very impressed how I could keep up. One time I was going down, and this car came drifting into my lane, it was a Porsche Carrera GT with a Evo closely behind. Then another time I saw a Ferrari 599? get shoved into the mountainside by a old Mustang Gt, (rear ended him!)

Oh ya you HAVE to go slow on blind turns. You don't know what could be there... a stopped car, pedestrian, or what. And that Ferrari looks totaled... hope he had good insurance...

The sucky thing is, you know for sure that mustang driver didn't have good enough insurance to cover the ferrari.
