From 500+rwhp Lexus to 335i... Now 335i plus JB2H / "R" Switch
Let me just begin by giving you guys a bit of a background on me. My last car was a Lexus IS300 converted to a big single turbo car. It was extremely heavily modified. The entire fuel system was upgraded including 720 cc injectors, dual feed fuel rail, FPR, fuel pump, etc. Ignition was upgraded using MSD. It had a LARGE Spearco FMIC, Garrett dual ball bearing 60 trim turbo, standalone engine management, race clutch, etc. It dyno'd at well over 500 rwhp and was nothing less than a beast. So why sell it? I just got tired of always worrying that something was going to break and I just didn't want to live on that edge anymore. The other problem was that the car was almost un-streetable since it was spinning the tires out of control. After a long decision process, I sold the car.
When I saw BMW had a twin turbo vehicle it really interested me. Well, I was very comfortable with car and loved the fact that the 6 speed tranny was used in the M5/6 (proving it can hold substantially more power) so I bought it. I have a Sept. '07 build 2008 335i. I absolutely love the car, but I felt it was just not reaching its potential in the power department. tt almost hits a wall when that wastegate opens and the turbos clearly are not reaching their potential. I still do not want to get into a situation where I feel the car will break because I don't want that cost or that worry. With that in mind, I finished my break-in and read a ton on the forums about the piggy's available. People may underestimate the problems with CELs/LIMPs, but I have been there and it is terribly embarrassing. Having a 40+k car where you need to stop the car because of a LIMP mode is rediculous and not acceptable to me. I remember having CELs and people would always ask me why that was on and I just don't want to deal with that ever again. This lead me to the decision many of us face.. Procede or Xede or SSTT or JB2 or Helix (eventually). I really am convinced after looking at dyno's, IATs, A/Fs that these all seem quite safe. I do NOT like that Procede is throwing codes and that just makes them not a viable option right now. The SSTT just seemed like an over priced JB2H. So, I decided to contact JB and speak with Terry a bit about his product. I love the fact that his setup is doing nothing that the stock car wouldn't ask itself to do under different altitude/temperature setups. To me, that is peace of mind that I want. I wish we had compressor maps to find the efficiency range of the turbos, but under around 15 psi seems to be agreed to be fairly safe. The JB2H easily falls in that range. Without CELs yet, clearly the DME is handling timing in this power level easily. The bottom line is this looked like the right choice and Terry is just as easy to deal with as every single guy on here states. I bought the JB2H / "R" switch and it was sitting in my mailbox 3 days later. I ran into one bug during the install, spoke with Terry, and everything was done without any headaches at all. The install is really not hard at all, but for someone like me who is very cautious, it took about 2 hours from start to stop to make sure I didn't do anything dumb. Well, it was time to drive the car. I have to say the car drives IDENTICAL to stock, but just has much more response and jumps when you press the gas. It feels like a turbo car now... you can feel the torque from the turbo and the spool as well. It really unleashes the power in the car. At 35 degrees, I spun all of first gear, got sideways completely in second, and to my surprise got sideways shifting into third around 65 mph. That is not an easy feat for a 3400 lb car. That is pretty sick power. In 70 degree temps, it still spins first but locks second and just takes off. I have yet to see any CELs/LIMPs. The car idles and drives like stock. There is zero change in gas mileage, but when you hit the gas, the car jumps. I have to say the car seems much more stable than my lexus drive train felt too, which makes me feel very good. I have yet to use the "R" switch, so I cannot really comment on that yet. The bottom line is I am very happy with Terry as he was very helpful. The power to price of the JB2H is second to none. I may want more power someday, but I feel very comfortable this car can easily handle this power for a while. The tranny really seems very strong under this power level as does the clutch. The engine purrs as smooth as it ever has. The extra boost of the "H" pill seems to be zero problem for the car to handle. I would like to see another 6 months of testing on the higher power setups before I would be willing to jump in and this is the perfect match for me at this time. You have to believe that if the stock ecu can do this just based on altitude and temperature, that you would have a case if a warranty issue was to arise, but we all know you are taking a risk. The thing I wish I could have seen is a video of the car running under WOT from a standstill to see the true power of the car. I can shoot this if anyone is interested in seeing how fast the boost hits and see the car kicking sideways. Please do not let this turn into a fanboy thread. Lets avoid the +1 or the JB2 rocks stuff. |

I just want this to be informative, where people can ask questions if they are interested. You know how we see a review that turns into 2 pages where there are only thinks like "JB rocks" and nothing ever gets said?

Do you have a boost gauge? And if so, what is the highest you have seen with JB2H so far? |

Nice writeup! Question about the IS300. How steep was the power curve? I would guess with that single turbo that you had a steep curve. I went against a single turbo IS300 in my Procede 335i v.1.47, and I couldn't gain on him when he was boosting. I seriously doubt that the car I encountered was as heavily modified as yours.

You know I debated whether or not to get one, but it seems so many consistently are seeing the same thing I didn't think it was worth it. If there is interest, maybe I can get one.
