Plasti-Dip of chrome trim - 2nd attempt!

So after my first attempt to plasti-dip the chrome trim on my 335 was “ok” I wasn’t 100% happy with the results, mainly as it peeled away slightly where the trim meets the paint.
After doing some reading up its seems I made two mistakes

1) I masked up right up to the edge of the trim
2) I didn’t use the special primer required for metal

So I peeled off the old stuff last week, prepped the car again by masking off but this time leaving a 2” gap around the trim, cleaned with white spirit and set about re-doing it.
You only have to apply the primer once but it dries damn fast so I applied in 30cm sections and then quickly gave a light coast of the Dip, then just built up about 5 layers worth over a few hours
Also important to use one continuous spray movement in one direction around the trim rather than a short burst back n forth technique as this results in drips and spray build up.

Once dried I took away the masking tape and paper and ran a fine craft knife on the trim edge, then just peeled away the oversprayed Plasti-Dip

I have to say I am well happy with the results, about as good as I think I could get it short of a pro-respray job.

I thought someone would ask this Q, so took a pic of the tin.

It is a plastidip product, I bought it to use with something else and forgot I had it sitting in the cupboard - annoyingly it only comes in 500ml tins which is about 490ml more than you need!

Edited to add that I used 1 can of 400ml Plastidip Spray which was 'just' about enough, ideally I think i'd order 2 cans if I did it again though.

Good job, I was going to try this if the wrap didn't work, fortunately it did....

Looks so much better without the chrome.

The Primer I painted on with the brush that's in the pic, the PlastiDip itself comes in an aerosol spray can.

Yup, that's exactly what mine did the first try and also I didn't spray it from all angles so from certain angles you could see the Chrome. Plastidip say the primer makes it 400% more adhesive.

Reviving a dead thread, I know, but wanted to make sure future readers know that the Primer is permanent, not peelable the way Plastidip is. From their website:

Like a primer coat for paint, Plasti Dip Primer should be applied to your chosen surface first, before adding Plasti Dip. Any color Plasti Dip can then be applied over it, and the treated item will gain the one-of-a-kind protection from moisture, abrasion, acids, corrosion, skidding, and slipping users have come to expect from Plasti Dip. On its own, Plasti Dip peels off of most surfaces easily; with a coat of Plasti Dip Primer applied underneath, it gains a far stronger, nearly permanent grip.

While Plasti Dip with a Primer undercoat can be removed with a great deal of effort, the Primer itself cannot be removed from the original surface once it has dried. Please use care when applying Plasti Dip Primer.

Good to know.

I'd be interested to know how well the plastidip does without primer.

I use it on fish hooks to prevent rust.

The stuff really sticks. I bet you'd be ok with no primer at all. If not, just peel it off anyway.

I'm wondering if the guys that had it peel off on them "at speed" just didn't use enough coats to really seal it down. OP mentioned being able to see the chrome through it on some angles, which leads me to believe that it didn't have enough coverage and probably caused at least some of the issue.

There are guys who have had it on for months (on car's main body and wheels) including going through car washes. It's sturdy stuff. Pretty phenomenal really. The durability of the stuff and how it can be pulled off in chunks when necessary.

Yes, see 2 min 50 sec in video above. Thick coat is essential.

I removed the trims completely from the car and gave them 6 coats each.First time I got to 70mph on motorway they just unstuck and where flapping about.i ended painting them and this lasted. No longer a fan of the stuff whatsoever, just peels off or tears far too easily.
