Intake cam fault codes

After changing the VCG on my E86 (N52), it idles roughly on startup until I give it a little gas. I get the following codes via Bavarian Technic: 2A82, 2A99 and 2F45. These are all related to the intake cam timing. The VCG change went pretty easily but I am left to wonder why there is no procedure for re-indexing the valvetronic motor. I suspect that these messages, as well as the rough idle, are the result of that worm gear not reindexing correctly to the gear on the cam driveshaft. Every thread that I read about the procedure says that this motor re-indexes itself after a couple of cycles but I have not had that experience as yet.

Is there any other step i can take before having a shop look at it? I have used a 4mm hex to rotate the worm gear shaft in both directions. It doesn't seem to affect this problem. I get no code for a valvetronic motor failure (is there one?). Is it safe to drive to the shop?

TIA

Hey, did you get any resolve here? I'm throwing code 2A82, as well.

Thanks a lot

Whoa there, you are getting a little ahead of yourself. 2A82 and 2A99 are both codes relating to the VANOS system, not the valvetronic. More specifically, they indicate a bad VANOS solenoid(common issue). Replace both while you are in there, it is a super easy process.

2F45 is system that checks the key used to the DME. Usually thrown when your battery gets old/weak. Given that you an '08, this seems pretty likely. Get a proper OE battery(they are pretty cheap) and don't forget to code it to the car.

I pulled both VANOS solenoids the other day, cleaned them pretty thoroughly, then swapped them when re-installing. I haven't had a code since (about 100 miles), so I'm just hoping for the best. I'll keep an eye on the codes, and if SA82 comes back, I'll probably end up replacing both with new ones.

thanks a lot

Sure thing. The nice part is that they are super easy to access on our cars.

I had Kais of Southbay Autohaus put in his GT-1. The intake VANOS solenoid is at fault. Both have been ordered and I should have a chance to install them on Monday. My steering angle code was a result of an alignment (toe adjustment) after I replaced the struts and shocks. Kais is a sharp guy. Very knowledgeable and reasonable.

It can also be the camshaft position sensors intake or exhaust, not just the solenoids as it was in my case, I kept getting codes they finally went away with the sensors after replacing 1 solenoid and using it to troubleshoot.

Furthermore if you car has newer DME software (been updated at the dealer post 2010 I believe) BMW introduced a cleaning profile that runs on startup that helps keep the solenoids in check, there is a TSB on this.

How do you determine the status of the DME software? I am using the BMW Techic software to read this stuff.

Hello dears,

Please i'm very desperate right now i love my bmw so much (325i e93) since 5 months ago i started getting the fault code 2A82 intake vanos. First of all i've tried cleaning the solenoid the error went off but after 20 min of driving it returns. I swapped the intake solenoid with the exhaust (logicaly the 2a87 error should pop up if the solenoid need a replace but sadly it didn't )
I'm still getting the 2a82 error . Today i replaced the intake soleniod with a new one i drove my car but sadly i still getting the error . My mechanic told maybe the new solenoid need adaptation ! But i don't think it will solve the problem , he told me if the problem persist he will change the vanos ! That's crazy my car has 100000 km in it and i've already spent 500$ without getting any concrete results.
i would appreciate any help
thank you

You aren't in Lebanon. Parts can get to be stunningly expensive in other parts of the world. I once sold a used set of Kumho race tires to a fellow in Seattle who was putting together a small container of Porsche parts to be shipped to a vintage racer in Germany. Go figure.
