Quick Oil Consumption...

Hi all,

I topped up my oil with a 1 litre bottle recently (19th june) as the warning sounded. Checked it again this morning and already it's one notch away from warning that it needs another litre!
I don't do big miles, i do a 26 mile round trip each day. So i've done probably just under a 1000 miles with weekend driving aswell.
I used to add 1 litre every 2000 miles but now it seems to be needing it more often.

I have a pre-lci 325i e90, manual. I know these can be thirsty on oil but this surely can't be normal?
No leaks that i've noticed when i've checked after parking overnight.

Any ideas?

Have you looked in the UK Tech section? Another poster is rebuilding his 2.5 n52 engine because of this

I have read the thread but my issue doesn't seem to be that bad. Car drives normal with no tell tale signs of anything being wrong apart from the quick oil consumption. The car is only on 28k miles 2007 plate.

Maybe you need to drive more and harder to lubricate all seals properly Mine done 99k and only uses 250ml per 1000 miles .

As others have stated oil every 1k isn't abnormal these cars like a drink as the oils used at over 100 dC these days so it'll cool as well as lubricate. Thing is if its got no oil leaks(check rocker cover, oil filter housing, vacuum pump)then the cars consuming its own oil.

We see a fair few of these cars mileage lowish mileage every day oil consumption as stated could point to early signs of a breather valve issue, quick test when the cars running open the oil filler cap and see if you can feel it sucking which means you'll feel some resistance if you like when opening the cap and lifting it off, if its a bad one you'll hear the engine note change and possiably a high pitched type whistle, simple test but it does help you to assertain whats going on.

Tell tale signs are plum of blue smoke when pulling off say from traffic lights/roundabout always visible follwoing the car sometimes difficult to see when looking in the rear view mirror.

Good old YouTube have vid's on it as you can see

The one above quite bad of course but it'll give you a pointer. Hope this helps

I've done 4600 miles since getting my 335i and never added a drop of Oil. The level on the Idrive has just literally dropped below max this week.

29,600 miles on the clock, 2009 model.

Thanks for all the replies. Will watch that vid when i get a bit of time, cheers steve.

Just thought it was a bit odd how it went from needing 1 litre every 2k to needing 1 litre every 1k.
