Simplify METH for us all...

I understand the concept well. However, there's a good bit of confusion for myself and I would imagine others, even after reading threads on methanol/water injection.

ECS has an AEM kit, specifically advertised under the 335d.
Other vendors (BMS) have a kit as well, but not sure if it's advertised as diesel specific or not.

Anyhow, where to get one isn't as important as what is needed, who is using what, and impacts.

Are there any error codes?
Is the removal so difficult that installing it while under warranty a bad idea?
What hp gains and mpg gains have we experienced?
Can it actually remove CBU or just prevent more of it after walnut blasting?
Hooper said he drove over 10k miles using the meth and still has a ways to go in clearing the CBU.

Those who have installed kits still available on the market today, would you care to share write up info or impressions after installing, which kit you're using and so on?

I'm confused :

Your link is the only one ECS advertises specifically for our cars, as I said.

The BMS kit isn't advertised for the D.

certainly depends on skill level. I can remove mine in about an hour and its not difficult at all, just takes time to get all the pieces out. A real mechanic could probably do it in less than a half hour, and someone with no mechanical skills might carpet bomb the project before getting it out

HP...I dont know? I can definitely feel the difference between now (its disconnected because my washer tank appears to be cracked) and when its working. I have no before/after dyno or 1/4 mile passes to help quantify this. No mileage difference but mine is not an MPG nozzle, there are probably times during my normal commute when it sprays a bit, but not much and nothing like you would see with an MPGmax type kit.

In my experience it will remove CBU. If you have a bad CBU issue though, this is obviously not an overnight fix and may not be the solution you need. In addition, if you have a bad CBU issue you may not want to try meth to clean it out rapidly as it could potentially cause DPF or catalyst failure

Hoopper and Austin I had read once thru one of our members that posted a link about this meth, that you can achieve up to 50 whp with Winshield Wahser Fluid as an alternative to meth, I believe it was from a DIESEL mag or something like about a yr ago. It was an interesting article though

I went with the Snow TDI kit, and made some minor changes myself just for install preferences. Some pictures are here: http://s406.photobucket.com/user/ste...ry/E90/MethInj

Are there any error codes?
None that tripped the SES light. I had a soft code for cyl 6 roughness while I was adjusting the kit to reduce quench.

Is the removal so difficult that installing it while under warranty a bad idea?
As far as warranty goes, that's entirely up to how the dealer feels. My install took over a day because i was anal about it. I'm sure I could pull the kit out in about an hour like Hooper said. Since i'm not certain yet if i'm going to trade the car, I picked up a few 1/8" NPT plugs so I could fully remove the kit and not have holes in the charge pipe.

What hp gains and mpg gains have we experienced?
Haven't seen any MPG gains because i'm always pushing it hard so it will help clean out the intake a bit. HP gains are tough to measure. I notice when it's not active, but that's kind of how every power mod for this car has been in my opinion. Also I've only run two gallons of boost juice and my nozzles have a combined rating of 285cc/min - about half of what most are using.

Can it actually remove CBU or just prevent more of it after walnut blasting?

I'm hoping it can. Didn't tear apart the intake before so I have no baseline. My car had 42k with a full emissions setup so I can only imagine there is some good buildup. Time will confirm, but Hooper's pictures are what convinced me to go ahead with the install.

Thanks for the info- it really does help. I'll look at pics and learn what I can before I purchase, but I'm installing a new front bumper next week and want to make a day out of it. For whatever reason it's always when my front bumper is off that I get to jump on other upgrades!

Mtech replica front is going to represent meth installed on my D. #MethTech.

Pardon my dumb question.

Where do you have the meth injectors located so you can reverse the install without having any left over holes?

You'd have to plug the hole where the injector attaches, so ideally drilling it on the bottom/back side where a plug can be placed when you remove the injector as mentioned a few posts up- that's ideal.

Yep!

For anyone interested, these are the plugs I ordered. Most places wanted close to $8 each, and by luck I found them for 75c each. Many NPT plugs don't have a head on them, just a hex socket. I wanted something wider than the hole so it couldn't come loose and get sucked in.

Would anyone suggest one of these $600-$900 kits over AEM's sub $400 kit for any reason?

I am open to pulling the trigger on this, but cheaper the better.

I have the AEM kit from ECS and am happy with it. running the middle nozzle and using ww tank. i think i get a point or two of mpg gains if i leave it on all the time. I added a kill switch to the ash tray so i can turn it off as I burn through the meth pretty quick going up and down hills on my commute. I think there are power gains but i cant say how much, i think they are in the upper band. i think it is helping clean the intake as the throttle hesitation seems to be getting better and the car feels better. i am running 10-25 boost settings. overall its a fairly cheap and good mod imo.

Good to know. I sort of want to go for a large tank if it works out well and just keep it on despite hills.
I'm pondering doing this or adding some body modifications before just in case something happens and I end up getting carbon cleaning performed for free, then add meth and EGR block to keep it clean.

im kinda in this boat, i want to get the CBU cleaned out first, then close up the EGR, add meth injection, muffler delete, and some type of tuning. cant wait, just gotta get the CBU cleaned out once my bmw tech buddy becomes more familiar with the process on the D.

Probably the best meth kits are made by Aquamist.

I second that question. I think some of you guys are running the Snow tdi kit so you are running 2 separate ones correct? What sizes are you all running either way??

I'm running very conservative nozzles. The 60 and 225. Been debating a 375 or 625 nozzle which I believe is what most are running.

Aquamist nozzles are pretty much the same thing as far as flow rate, they just label the nozzles in mm. I think the 1.0 or whatever is a 625cc/min. There is a chart on their site somewhere that shows flow rate per nozzle.

Snow TDI kit ships with a 60, 175 & 225cc nozzle (numbers 1, 3 & 4).
