Automatic gearbox "misses gears"?

Hi!

I was doing some WOT pulls this evening and the car felt like it missed a gear around 5500 rpm when being in 3rd or 4th gear. The engine was reving up but didn't drive forward for like a half a second. Just like missing a gear on a manual gearbox.

This happend both with the DS mode and using the paddles (manual).

The car is a BMW 335i 07 e90 with 45k and mods are the Procede v4 tune and I just had a oil- and spark plug change.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

Try resetting trans adaptations... Could be a valve body issue though, I think the 07's have an issue with that (I think).

This has driven me nuts for a long time and today I just realized what it is. I have spacers to stop the kick down however they aren't rigid so if I get a little heavy footed every now and then I will hit the kick down right as I am getting ready to shift.

The reaction is the paddles/levers go dead for a few moments and the trans hangs before correcting. I am having my machinist make me an alloy stop instead of the pads I use.

Thanks for the answers!

What is exactly the trans adaptations, and how do I reset them?

If the gearbox slip, should it be doing that all the time? When doing the wot right now it's like putting the neutral mode for a half second when reaching high rpm's, not on 1st or 2nd gear though, and not every time.

I am not sure if I understand what you meab atx335. What are ther spacers you're talking about?

Sorry for bad language and stupid questions.

Rgds,

Was trying again today...

The transmission shifted perfect from 2nd to 3rd, but when it was going to shift from 3rd to 4th (WOT) it hesitated a bit and "slammed" the gear.

Also it was a warning sign on the dashboard with a big gearwheel. I pulled over and closed the car and started again and it was gone.

What does that mean?

Your throwing trans codes it will tell you why. It sounds like you have clutch slip on the 3-4. If you have INPA Bav-tech or simillar high end diagnostic scanner you can pull trans codes.

Log it and pull the trans codes...but sure as hell sounds like you are seeing mechanical slip, bottom line. The below log from my car illustrates what you are feeling, though my car has never actually limped the transmission. It just doesn't like the 3-4 shift one bit.

Sorry, I don't have the equipment to read these kind of codes.

It seems that the gearbox have no issue putting the next gear when I am not flooring it.

What if the gearbox slips on 3rd-4th gear, what do I need to do? Sounds expensive

Not many options. It's possible the clutches are just burnt up.

You could try to shim the valvebody via a company like LVL10, that's helped up the clamp pressure for some folks.

But outside of that if there is hardware damage, a replacement is the only option. Obviously not cheap but not as disastrously expensive as you'd think. Relatively low mileage examples can be had for well under $1.5K. Since you'd be swapping out the entire trans rather than opening it up, I wouldn't think labor would be particularly gruesome either.

Thanks for the reply.

I think that another gearbox is pretty expensive in Sweden with the labour.

Is there another way to decide what the problem is?

You need some means of understanding what codes it is spitting out. You could purchase an INPA cable (cheap), Bavarian Technic cable (not as cheap), or go the dealer and ask them to pull the codes via GT cable or whatever they are using now a days.

Without that it's just guessing. My guess is that you have damaged the clutches, it is what it is.

pay attention to your mode, if you're in DS (aka S) mode....the system will automatically change gear for you at around 4500-5000 RPM. The reason why you think it hesitated is becuz you actually skip a gear. Say you're in 2nd gear, as soon as you hit that RPM range, the system automatically shift up to 3rd gear, then you also shift up without knowing that the system already shifted up for you.

try to test it again but make sure you're on "M" mode.

But in DS mode the gearbox changes gears just before the red line, and not at 5500 rpm, right?

Mine did the same thing yesterday. Went WOT in manual 2nd and on the shift to 3rd it felt like it went into neutral and the revs redlined. I let off the gas immediately and all was fine. Now that I think about it, I may have hit the kickdown and it actually went into 1st at the wrong time.

i don't believe the gearbox does this with the Alpina Flash. In M mode, it holds the gear untill i shift.

This is a good point you didn't mention if you had the alpina trans flash OP. That may help if the hardware isn't to far gone. Bonus is it is free if you have an inpa cable.

With the Alpina, does it not force upshift for you in manual mode? That would be cool if it didn't.

Does it downshift when you hit the kickdown in manual mode?

means your trans is fucked... or on its way. check codes, change oil and filter.

in M doesn't matter software it will always shift automatically at redline in M mode. to hit the rev limiter you need to hold the shift paddle after shifting up.
