HELP: VRSF CP/engine malfunction

I installed my VRSF charge pipe today. Everything was great and the car drove fine. After I took it to high rpm the charge pipe came off the the throttle body and the car gave me a check engine light and and the engine malfunction notice letting me know it is in limp mode. I can no longer hear a turbo spool which i suspect is fine cus of limp mode. however, my fuel gauge can be all over the place now because of the jb4 boost gauge option which i have set to the fuel gauge.

Any thoughts? I am really hoping i didnt damage the motor when the charge pipe came off the throttle body at high rpm

any help would be appreciated

This wont damage the motor. Charge pipes have been shattering/coming off N54's forever and a day now.

Make sure you get the C-clip on there properly, only thing I can think of is you didnt put it on right.

I remounted the charge pipe to the throttle body and the c clip is in there. How would the engine recognize even if it is a loose c clip if the seal with the o ring is fine.

After securing it to the throttle body i turned the car on and it still gave me engine malfunction notice.

I would work backwards, remove the pipe from the car and inspect that the O-Ring is properly installed, then confirm the C-Clip is completely sliding down locking into place. Make sure you push the chargepipe all the way onto the throttle-body, kind of an awkward hand position.

That's weird. Like immediately it was on? Or it came back on after revving it up? Normally with a engine malfunction from a charge pipe boost leak it will go away when you turn it off and on, and will come back if you get on the throttle a bit. Make sure you didn't accidentally disconnect any vacuum hoses.

yes it is on immediately after turning on the car.
I am not worried about spending time to reinstall the charge pipe. I am worried that something serious may have happened

If that's all that happened you didn't damage anything. I've had them come off at over 20psi. Check the other end of the connection at the coupler. I've even had it come loose at intercooler. Make sure the tmap sensor is still plugged in too

+1

Make sure the C-clip is properly installed. I use to have a similar issue with the C-clip on the OEM intercooler/couplers. I was surprised that I didn't installed it right, but it happens

Look more closely at your c clip. I thought I had installed c clip correctly, but was getting under boost codes. After rechecking, I noticed that even though I pushed it all the way in, the left side of the c clip was not actually pushed into the groove in the tb. I had to use a flat head and push in all around the clip to make sure it was completely sealing.

Check the TMAP connection and pulls the codes.

I checked everything and reinstalled the charge pipe. Still having the same issue. Tried pushing in the c clip the best I could and it appears to have a good strong seal. Same with the intercooler side, I retightened everything.

My only guess is the tmap sensor. Because one of the prongs was bent and some of the plastic cracked. I'm assuming when the charge pipe came off the throttle body it pulled the sensor and that's when the plastic broke. It still seems to click in fine tho and I bent the prong back into place.

Also, the engine is running loud and idling rough. Even stalling out sometimes.

I don't have a code reader and don't know what else I could attempt.

Sounds like the flange wasn't seated all the way onto the TB. The connection is pretty tight so you have to use a bit of muscle to get it on but if properly installed there's no chance of it popping off.

Looks like you may need a new MAP sensor. You MIGHT be able to straighten that prong and make it work temporarily.

They're not too expensive

I would say that even if installed properly there is still a chance of it popping off. As another member mentioned, the cp popping off the throttle body is not a rare occurrence. Not to mention a lot of run higher than stock boost levels.

Do you think that if the sensor is the issue that the car would be reacting as it is? Limp mode, engine malfunction indicator

THANKS ALL FOR YOUR HELP AND ADVICE

I found this replacement from ecs tuning: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E90-335...gine/ES514362/

The description states "Helps with idle issues and throttle surging" so it sounds like this is my problem. My car runs rough and does throttle surge. I am assuming with those issues that the car will automatically give me the engine malfunction notice.

Shout out to ecs tuning!!!

If you've checked all vacuum lines, and connections are properly made, then i'd assume that's your problem. No matter what you should replace it, but I can guess that it's not making proper contact anymore with that bent pin.

You can call a local dealership and see if they have it in stock, might cost a bit more, but better than waiting until early next week if you need your car running.

Your tmap sensor prongs don't look too bad . I'm sure you can straighten them out. Once my tmap prongs were flattened to the point of horizon and I was sure I had to get a new one but I just straightened it out and plugged it back in haha. Still hittin 15+ psi no codes (knock on wood).

It is only one prong that got bent. And a crack in the plastic housing. I'll attempt to straighten it before i purchase a new map sensor

I will most likely still replace it even if i get it to work but if the issue is resolved at least I will know for sure that it was the map sensor and not anything else.

Quick question, isn't that the same plug where you plug in the split second turbo tuner? I messed up a clip that goes there once, trying to install the sstt. The little tab that holds the plug in place popped off once I plugged it in and it fit so snug it never came off. It's been 4 years since that. I mean yours looks a lot worse being cracked , but I mean as long as there is a connection and it doesn't fall loose it should be fine. But I'd probably order once too if it was that cracked just to have peace of mind.

UPDATE: I removed the map sensor and was able to straighten out the bent prong with the help of tweezers and a flat head. After reinstalling the sensor it now makes good connection and the car no longer shows an engine malfunction!

As for the chargepipe it slipped off again for me(throttle body side). I popped it right back on but I will need to inspect how it is mounted and make sure i get it installed on there properly so it doesn't come off on me. I suspect that i might need a new c clip

thanks everyone for your help!
