Questions about turbo replacement
Took my car in for wastegate rattle. The SA said that he can tell just by hearing the car that it has really bad rattle. He told me there would be $175 diagnostic charge if it turned out that they wont be covered under the 82,000 mile warranty. I say thats fine thinking they have to be since everyone clearly can hear it. He then comes back an hour later telling me they need to remove the downpipes to inspect the rod that goes into the turbo that connects to the actuator rod. He says that will be $600 and if the rod isn't worn ill be on the hook for that.
Do you guys think this is a good idea because it sounds like a $600 dollar shot in the dark to me. |

The SA pretty much told me if the rod is not worn when they take off the downpipes then they wanna replace the actuator arms which is not under the 82,000 mile warranty. and that will be 3k which i would not do. Just trying to get the turbos replaced at no charge because of the terrible rattle.

They're tryin to rip you off, go somewhere else.
since you have stock dp's: If you can hear the rattle consistently as described on the bulletin, they must replace your wastegates. If they take it all apart, they may decide that the arm is worn and may want to replace it also. Adding this step to the rest already covered under warranty should not cost more than $50 IMO - they are already right there to begin with, and the extra part (metal rod) and labor are not much more. Honestly at that point they should just goodwill the arm (that's what my shop did).

Jay, just notice you are also in Chicago. Just wondering which dealer was it that was trying to rip you off. My guess is Perillo BMW.

same exact thing happened. No dealership i went to wanted to admit they heard the sound when i could clearly hear it. When my car went in for another expensive ass repair, i told them about it. ANd still they ignored it.
THe sa stated that too many people complain of the problem. Maybe if they built the car properly and addressed the issue, they wouldnt have to deal with it now. |

I couldn't agree more. They will end up coming back with you just owing $600, and not fixing or checking a whole lot.

i had to deal with this same run around here in the chicago area! i went to patrick in schaumburg and they gave me the same story pretty much word for word. Fields was even worse, my car rattles pretty bad and the tech came out and very rudely told me that it was "normal operating noise" and refused to listen to anything i had to say about it. i never tried other dealers besides those 2. i hope you find one that will help! i will be following in right behind you if you do.

they were trying to rip you off, its worth trying westmont. i ve had good experiences with them when i used to live there but you may want to write BMW NA directly. just had my turbos replaced here in michigan under warranty, no hassles whatsoever. no diagnostics charge, no BS at all

WHo is the SA at Schaumburg ? I assumed you were at Elmhurst before I completed reading all of the posts. I've never been charged a diagnostic fee.

I just got my turbo's replaced about 300 miles ago, and they still are rattling, even worse than before I think it has something to do with how the JB4 controls the wastegates.
