Weird Water Message on iDrive... Water Hot, Drive Moderately
There have been a lot of water pump failures lately. I guess the cars are getting to that age.
So yesterday i went for a drive and i wasn't pushing the car what so ever as it was all very slow town driving. Up on the iDrive a yellow message came up saying. "Water Temperature Hot, Drive Moderately" I knew this usually means that the red warning light would follow saying that the engine overheated. So i pulled over within 20 seconds and stopped the car. The oil temp wasn't that hot, but i knew that this meant nothing. So i used my JB4 gauge hijack and put the water temp on the oil temp. It was under the half way mark which i didn't think was that hot. I turned the car off and on to reset everything and there were non warning messages on the idrive screen. I thought I would drive my car back home easily in the traffic which took about 15mins and i monitored the temps all the way home. The oil stuck at the half way point and the water temp was always below half way and didn't budge. The iDrive warning never came back either.... Do you think my car went crazy for the moment? Maybe there is nothing wrong at all? Im going to check my coolant level today as ive heard that the coolant level warning message doesn't always come on. Has anyone experienced this scare before? |

You may have to wait for to actually fail to get your warranty to replace it unfortunately

Maybe, if the dealer can get the car to show the same error message, OP should be good to go for warranty replacement.

Good luck it always seems as though dealers can never replicate the problems very often and unfortunately you will probably be on the road like the rest of us when it does crap out mine died at 63k on a very busy road i barely managed to coast off the side of the road

Mine did something similar a few weeks back, got the yellow warning, then the red warning, pulled over, coolant was at 250F (I have a perf steering wheel so can get the actual temp), let it cool down to 210 and then started it back up to limp it home and after about a minute the temp went down to 170F and no more issues for the next couple days.
So living in fear, replaced water pump and thermostat as the car is a 2008 and inevitably was going to fail!

There will probably be code(s) for water pump speed deviation. That's enough for most warranty work, even aftermarket warranty companies. Did the same for my 2006-build 335i, and I only got one overheat warning on a Saturday. Let the car cool, drove it to the shop gently and left it, and the warranty company just asked for the code and circumstances on Monday morning. They approved the work without question, done same day.

Thanks everyone.
Ive been watching my water temps closely and they have been pretty solid, but i havent been doing any hard driving. I will be doing 200miles this weekend in the hope to get it to fail as BMW wont take it in until it fails. Lets see what happens |

Scan for codes but don't clear them. Then take the car in and show the sa the codes. Thats what I did when my pump was failing and they took care of it. If your scan comes back clean then don't worry about it and keep driving.

Mine failed suddenly, so when people say you're playing with fire, you're playing with fire. I was around 60k miles ('09). Luckily only 4 mile commute to work at the time so by the time I got the "hot" message I was pulling in the parking lot.

First sign of water pump failing for me was the fan working on full blast non stop. Then it was the warning like yours. Took it to the dealer. Extended warranty covered it, thank you Lord. 09 335. At 61xxx miles

So i've been driving around.
Did around 300miles over the weekend and nothing went wrong. Everything is running smoothly and absolutely fine. I am sure when it does crap out, it will be sudden.... and i must have received this first initial warning for a reason.... Nope Quote:

I really want the pump to fail so i can get BMW to warranty it and i can start driving comfortably again without the fear of it crapping out on me randomly |
