2009 E90 Audio Build

Just got the finishing touches on the aesthetics of my audio build for my 2009 335xi. Took some of the looks from some of Simplicity in Sound's builds that they have done for numerous BMWs.

Equipment list
Amps
IA10.1
(2) IA3.4

Sub
Sundown SA10

Speakers
Undecided what I am going to go with. Been looking into some hifi pro audio components and I think that is the direction I am going

Processor
Had a JBL MS8 but wasn't a fan of it. Switching it out for a PPI DEQ.8 MiniDSP Based processor

Now for some pics

1st up is the Fiberglass Corner Enclosure.

Test fitting the bottom of the false floor and amps. Using an IA20.1 here, ended up having to send it in for repairs so the 10.1 is currently being used.

Making my own RCAs for this project so I can have exact lengths and colors I want.

Enclosure and sub test fit.

Making the false floor to hide the amps.

Smoothing out the enclosure with filler.

Hard to find carpet that matches the trunk liner. 1st try was too light. I tried dyeing it darker but that turned out terrible.

Ended up having a local shop find me some carpet and special order it for me. Still not quite the same, but it is closer and im hoping after some time, it will fade a little and be spot on. Wrapped the bottom panel in a white vinyl as well as the amp panel. I put some grills in the panel to get air moving and wrapped them in the grey carpet. Also moved the battery fro the side tray to underneath everything.

Currently running all the OEM speakers off the amps using the amps active crossovers. Doesn't sound too bad at all. Once I get the PPI Processor, I will throw that in to the mix and mess with the staging and imaging. And eventually finish it off with upgraded speakers.

Looks nice so far. How do your sub and amps compare to JL Audio? I don't know those brands. PPI is good stuff. Id listen to focal, Boston Aucoustic, and JL speakers too. See what sounds best to you and is in your budget. Doing anything to the head unit? Sub Grill so you don't damage it from something shifting in the trunk? Is your enclosure sealed or ported? What HZ did you max the sub at? Carpet looks light to oem. Maybe cover other oem stuff so it looks even or find something closer? Just my $0.02. Did this professionally for 3 yrs but that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Compared to jl, I'd run sundown and incriminator audio all day long.

I ended up putting a grill on to protect the sub. It is in a .75cuft sealed enclosure crossed over at 60hz.

The 1st picture of carpet was the old stuff. The new stuff was a tad darker, but the carpet has lightened up and you can't tell it's different from the oem anymore.

As far as the rest of the build, not doing anything to the head unit. Wanted it to look stock. And the speakers i have settled on audison but haven't gotten around to installing them.

Good stuff. I was looking at the Dynavin N6 for mine. I don't have idrive and thought nav in the dash and backup camera would be nice.

Thought you were gonna have a nice subtle handle attached to a cut out piece of wood for the amps... Nope.. Funky white cross thing to finish off excellent work. Not sure about all that weight too (for those who don't know, mdf is heavy). So is that battery..

wanted to give it a little pop of color so it isnt just a boring flat grey panel.

And if you are worried about weight, then you arent adding anything to the audio system.

But I still run in the 11s though, so who cares.

Build a car so you can haul the equivalent of two dead children in your trunk everywhere and still beat v8s... You're going places

If you think audio needs to be heavy to be loud then just stop buying junk and see for yourself.

2400w rms at 1 ohm if I'm not mistaken, for that amp.. Odd purchase just to have a little bass boost .. And a gray boot would look better, I mean after all it is the boot. Nobody would ever see it if it wasn't your pic lol.

An IA10.1 is 1200rms @ 1ohm and I have it turned down to about 750ish when it is full tilt. Since it is aimed at SQ and not SPL or even SQL, it rarely even sees that amount.

And I got these amps for next to nothing thanks to my former connections in the audio world.

Wait, so you are running 1 ohm? Less ohms = less quality. But you probably knew that, since your build is Sq focused.

It's ok. Your type fills the audio industry, I'm use to it.

lol...

Head over to DIYMA, CarAudio.com and CACO, do some research, then come back and we can talk.

Been doing this for over 10years, had multiple state records in multiple states, and countless numbers of SQ and SPL Competition wins. But what do I know

Yeah, and I work with a guy who was a sniper, raced moto-x, bought a full snap on set with his moto-x winnings, and is currently building a nova with a blower on it, or so he'd have everyone believe. I'm done here, however.

Actually 2 kicker l7s and 2 zx1000.1's but I don't feel like putting dead bodies in the trunk of a tt car. Makes no sense.

Oh, didnt know you had L7s, now it all makes sense.

and you bought the XI version, which is already at a disadvantage for performance, so if thats all you care about, sell it and get the right performance model.
