New owner + Engine fault reduced power

Hi BMW owners!

I have just picked up a 2008 335i M Sport today. What a load of fun it is
I'm coming out of a v8 VE commodore so this refinement is very new to me!

But, twice today I've given it the boot up to the redline and the "engine fault reduced power" warning has come on. It doesn't come on under any other driving condition. Not a great start to ownership of this car!

The car drives brilliantly though. There is no slow crank at all (it had the HPFP replaced previously). It is not modified at all.

I've been doing it a bit of searching and possibilities seem to be waste gate actuator, plugs or coils ??

Wondering if anyone knows what it could be?

Cheers
Andrew

Whats the Ks on the car? Try replacing the plugs and coil for start. It happen to me when I got my 335i with 75,000km on the clock. Changed the plugs and coil and the car goes like a dream.

Take it to Steven and Jin at active Motorwerke in burwood they will run some tests and tell you exactly what it is.

Don't get too worried about the engine faults they are common in this car. I was the same when I got my car. Did mods and tuned it finely and haven't had a engine fault since and red line it a LOT!

Where abouts in melbourne are you anyways ?

can be plugs or coils, or could be vacuum lines, talked to Jin and Steven and I've decided to wait till I get my CP and BOV then check if I still get the fault then we can rule the CP out as leaking boost, then check vacuum lines and plugs, I barely get the light and more concerned with the boost dropping atm. still drives fine though and loads of torque so don't need to rev it out anyway haha. hopefully fixed soon

Do you feel any 'hicups' under heavy acceleration/WOT?

My car had that issue, started with minor 'hicups' (most noticably around 3-4k rpm) every time I was under heavy throttle, this eventually turned into a 'engine fault, reduced power' error under WOT.

My cause was vanos, got them cleaned & no problems since.

I'm in Elsternwick.

No hiccups at all it drives really well through the rev range with seemingly full power at all times. I don't even think it is a WOT issue as it only occurs at redline.

Will have to get it checked out but sounds like plugs and coils is not a bad thing to change regardless.

Sounds like a cylinder misfire, so plugs/coils as said to begin with. Otherwise fuel injectors which will be a PITA dollars wise

Get your codes checked to see exactly what the issue is.

This is the way to go - the codes will tell all. There may be any number of issues which will cause this to happen. Pain as it is, it is just a way of preventing any potential damage.

Welcome to 335i ownership too btw. Just wait until you start modding and you will never look back!

Welcome to 335i ownership, it will start breaking your wallet!

Like what others had just said, It can be anything ranging from HPFP, coils, plugs and injectors.

Active Motorwerke seem to be highly recommended. But Southern BM are much much closer to me to get the codes scanned. Are they alright?

I had very similar symptons. After I read the codes it was sticky solenoids. Worked great after replacement.

Mine is a 325 with N52, and 60000km, does the change of plugs and coils will benefit my car as well?
Thanks.

Hmmm another redline only issue... i had issues with my procede tune, it would sputter and jerk like crazy and then i would get limp mode or in one case, total shutdown but only if i let it wind all the way out to redline. if i shifted early it was fine... i dont get the issue at all without the procede on stock power. Keep us posted with what happens because iv been chasing it for a while with my car, im really egar to tune again but not until theres at least a rough idea of what the problem is, no one could help me with all my logs ect.

Closest i came to finding some others with similar issue was guys with cracked valve cover gaskets and oil on their plugs... reporting same symptoms and noting they all had cracked valve cover gaskets, only about 3 guys though. Perhaps theres something in that. Sounds very similar to your issue anyway, FYI i cleaned vanos and did plugs and the problem persisted.

I got the engine fault error again tonight, but this time it wasn't at redline. It was on WOT at around 4000 rpm. So perhaps this issue is different? Dunno though, I will make some time to get the codes read and go from there.

I am not sure if mine misfires......is there any ways I can tell?
But the car feel a bit loss of power or hesitate to go sometimes when I accelerate....maybe that's just cause its a N52?
