The Leaping of the Tiger

I've often wondered what Axel meant when he kept talking about leaping tigers.

Now I know.

I know because I have been inside the belly of that tiger. That growl upon acceleration, that pouncing with the DPF, SCR, and EGR removed. That menacing claw-like devourment of the quivering asphalt below those massive paws.

Congrats TorqueAddict.

Thank you for bringing me into the animal kingdom. What once I thought was merely lore, has now become reality.

If he is coming down on your car, I would like to see the body shop bill.

^ Thanks Greek for the review i just howled when i went through this thread. The car performs like crazy now. The torque comes in very linear and the car pulls all the way to 45-4700 rpm. The power delivery is very linear as well. I have noticed a lot of improvement within the city driving as well. The car used to be a bit jerky sometimes and the throttle response was a bit vague. Now, the throttle response is far more predictive. I can manipulate the behavior very well now. Actually, i took it on a track today. I was amazed with the performance. There are a few things that i notice that could be improved. I have an appointment with Jarek tomorrow, and he says that he will need the car for a couple of days to iron out some bugs.

I bet you'll be asking for more power from Jarek tomorrow.

^ Yup. Jarek intentionally put a limiter in the torque map of my car, and he did not take off the speed governor. I asked him why? His reply was : "That's a lots of power for you for now. I don't want you to wrap your car around a tree. Get a feel of it first, and then we will max it out"

Stay away from the track too man. It'll only make you realize how bad you'll want an LSD next.

I forget. Are you coming from a JBD @ 100% or another tune? Or are you coming to this from no tune and no piggyback?

No tune or piggyback. Coming from a stock car. Got the deletes and the tune together.

With the usual disclaimer that I am not the greatest track driver (putting it mildly), my first and second track days were like this:

2012 - completely stock except for Bilstein B6 dampers. OEM tires were slippery, particularly in the wet after a couple of 15 minute sessions, brakes were fine throughout, suspension was adequate for my skill level, and the stock power manifested itself well enough, but the combination of good stock torque and the difficulty for me of proper throttle management meant that the rear end wanted to step out a bit when applying power at turn exits; and I'm referring to all speeds from 30 mph or so up to 60 mph+.

2013 - had the JDB set at 100%. No more difficulty in controlling the power than before, but this was probably because:
1. I was slightly more skilled.
2. The track was dry for all sessions.
3. The tires were now Michelin PSS.
4. I now had a Quaife LSD in place.
5. The suspension was basically all M3+ (see profile).
Overall a much more satisfying experience, albeit still limited by my modest driving skills.

I guess my only message is that you are probably in a much better position to judge the effects of the tune on your daily driving and track experience than I was with the addition of the JBD because you aren't doing all your mods at one time. It required a lot of study and discussions and careful observations to isolate the impact and explain the effect of each individual mod. But in hindsight I think that, all things being held constant except the JDB, the addition of the JBD alone would have made the car a real handful on the track. For me, and I may be alone on this, the JBD made the throttle management more difficult not easier, so your experience with your tune with more smooth throttle application is a great by product that comes along with all that additional power.

Thank you for your insight. All these mods that you mentioned are good to have if you frequently track your car. I am planning to upgrade to Michelin PSS soon. Stock tires are garbage. Its really hard to put power to the ground with them. Next will be the suspension, and after that LSD

Thanks for sharing.

But I can't actually see what's being shown on the laptop...

It almost looks like "Low Pressure EGR" is being shown, which means this must be a X5d? The 335d only has high pressure EGR... Does he have the high pressure EGR fully coded out on the 335d? That would be a good thing if true.

I know, the video looks like it has been filmed with a potato. In this video he is working on my car. If you pause the video while his laptop screen shows up, and fullscreen it on your laptop/ monitor, it is kind of legible. You can see "High pressure EGR activity" highlighted in green. On the right hand side of the screen, you can see "EGR Controller duty cycle", which stays @ 0% as he revs.
