Melbourne Tuner 335i N54
So I've bought a 335i as a daily. Considering a full exhaust and a Cobb with a full custom dyno tune. First question is who are the go to people for tuning for this vehicle in Melbourne. I see CRD and Advan in Sydney but not much in Melbs. I'm expecting 50 RWKW from the above.
I'm happy to receive advice on the best first power mods. I guess intake is the other obvious area but I'm not into massive diminishing returns for the last 10kw and also I don't want to fall into the trap of going too far. This car is a daily and also needs to be wife friendly. Thanks in advance. Nick. |

Active Motorwerkes is great in Melbourne. Talk to Jin or Steven there, nice guys and know a lot our cars. They're located in Burwood.

Dont bother with the exhaust, get a tune DP's and FMIC if you're after BFYB. a full exhaust only gives a few kw as the existing design flows quite well. Those of us with DP's and BMW PE only do it for the engine note (DP's are like 10% louder then stock, DP's and BMW PE is like 25%)
You will get a much nicer exhaust note with the catless DP's alone and much more power as the turbos flow so much better. |

At the risk of turning this thread into one that has been done many times before, I've been offered a Gruppe M replica intake. Brief reading suggests more top end but less down low torque. But really I just want it for what I think will be the extra induction noise. Thoughts on this? No idea what they want for it $$ wise and it may have to go on the nice to do list.
I'll be calling Active Motorwerkes this morning in any case so I'll run all of this past them. Probably best to take advice from the guys who do this stuff all day for a living and will be doing the work on the car. Doesn't hurt to get the internet's opinion though Thanks for all your replies and assistance. |

Don't by an exhaust! last thing needed on n54
You do not get n54s tuned at your local garages in Australia. Either get remote tuned by PTF via cobb ap or by Terry at BMS with a jb4. |

Thanks Brule, yes, seems the zorst idea isn't a good one. Catless DPs? Seems to me they're a yes. And BMS is that Burger Motorsports? How does the tuning work with them and PTF, and hoes does this intersect with hardware install? So a garage fits my DPs, aftermarket intercooler, and intake mod. I've got my Cobb AP set to the first level map? Do some in gear pulls, log them in the Cobb AP, send them the log files, they send a tune back, repeat until it's done? Custom map is built this way? Only fear is having a fairly generic tune on all that hardware and getting, say detonation, on the logging pulls. I guess it's all been done before and I need to do my research. In NSW there seems to be Advan and CRD and I'm unsure in Melbourne Active Motorwerkes do custom tuning. These guys can't tune an N54? I note you're based in Darwin so perhaps for you remote tuning is the besat option?

You have it all sorted out in the first couple of lines.
PTF and BMS (Burger motorsport) are the best for tuning N54. Don't bother with anyone in Australia. Australia people might tune your car ok, but BMS and PTF have done literally hundreds and hundreds maybe thousands of N54 custom tunes. modding list for power tune 50hp intake 5hp intercooler 10hp downpipe 15hp If you go these you will have 380-400hp at wheels and more if you have E85 fuel |

Went to Active Autowerkes today and they seem switched on. Steve is easy to deal with and it all looks right down there. At this stage it's JB4, cat less down pipes, a carbon air box, and get new coils and plugs and engine oil. JB will be set to map 5 which is the self learning map. See where that all gets me to and go the whole tune em up thing when I'm bored.
Now, Cobb or JB? Which is better? Only joking...I'm thinking I may as we'll go with what the workshop recommends hence JB4. It's not cattle stations either way and I think you can actually have both if you want to get really tricky. |

My JB4 has just arrived, and I haven't put it in yet (so take from that my experience with it so far is nil).
But my advice is either way, the JB4 being a plug and play, you could resell it for a good price if you decide to swap it out. |

to put things to perspective, today I had a run with my friends stock '08 135. from a 80km/h roll in 3rd gear i put 2 car lengths on him pretty quick (won't say on here at what speed) but if we kept going i think would've just kept pulling away haha
tuned N54's are amazing <3

I'm so tempted too for a tune but reliability/longevity worries me at this stage. Maybe I am worrying for nothing lol who knows. I would hands down choose BMS compared to the COBB. DR JEKL I'm waiting for your email response regarding PE..

Trust me once you start tunning there is no turning back. Especially this car, it turns into a animal and is so much fun you have a good list of mods to start with see how it goes.
If the boost is holding well in your stock charge pipe then that's good. However eventually you will have to change that if you are on a be pushing the car a lot. Look into some charge pipes and a decent intake. Ohh and wait till your catless dps are in man you are gonna love the pop ! |

Thanks mate. When you say also do you mean in addition to the JB4 or instead of? Perhaps this is a back end flash?

Back end flash can be done many ways. old way was to use cobb to load a flash then use JB4 to control boost and features.
New way is to use a Bav Tech cable ($179) and load maps for types of fuel, with JB4 still used for boost and features. Best intake is $100 don't get raped |
