Brakes sticking?

I have an issue with my front brakes where they seem to stick. I stop fine, but often, when I release the brake, I can feel them unstick from the rotors. Anyone ever have this happen? 2006 325i with 125K.

Might just be the hill hold...does the automatics have the hill hold feature?

Same here...I don't think it's an "auto" thing at all, but more than likely has to do with the compound of the OEM pads.

Yeah...it's definitely not normal. At first, I thought it was some engine surge, but without gas, it doesn't shoot forward. Feels more like when you have tacky stuff on your fingers and they hold, but eventually snap apart.

Guys its called Hill Assist. Completely normal. Me too I have an 06 330i and I have the same thing.

So hill assist is supposed to create the sensation of sticky brakes on a flat surface?

so if you feel your brakes are not operating correctly, i strongly suggest you take your car to a trusted and reputable mechanic and have the system thoroughly inspected for correct operation.

no you should not feel sticky brakes with hill assist. sounds like you have sticky calipers and need to be rebuilt. The piston might be sticking and not releasing right away.

I have this issue recently aswell, I just assumed it was the disks/pads were on the way out and need to be replaced? Can someone please confirm this?

Hill hold does not feel like sticky brakes. Hill hold just releases when I hit the gas.

I don't have this problem. When I do a brake job, I clean out everything and then lube the guide pins with plasti-lube besides anti-squel crap on the back of the pads and ears. I don't just take the old pad off and put the new pad on. Also, my last brake job, I rebuilt the calipers.

I think I'll be needing new brakes up front soon. I'll service the front calipers at that time and hopefully all will be good after.

Being that you have an 06', have you ever put in new caliper Guide Bushings & Bolts (Items #6 & 8 below)?



So many change their pads for years & never replace these parts (or even bother to clean them up). I replace the Guide Bushings & Bolts every brake job - they aren't that much $$...

These need to function properly to prevent uneven pad wear & caliper sticking.

I haven't done the front brakes yet. I'll check on this part when I do it. Thanks for the tip.

Weird, I never heard of caliper guide bushing sticking. Take them out use sandpaper around them to clean them and add grease to them as well. I did this last time I changed my rear brakes and rotors.

Actually, BMW recommends to NOT use grease on the Guide Pins or Bushings...

I don't always go by what BMW says, check below for video from FCP Euro. This guys are well worthy team and have worked with European cars for over 25 yrs.

Yup, I've seen that video as I buy the bushings, pins, brake sensor lines from FCP.

I follow his directions exactly, except I use a small steel brush to clean the caliper pad ear sliding surfaces & I don't grease the pins.

Again, only reason I don't is because BMW states not to (IDK if they feel that the grease only aides in the collection of crap to the pin making it gum up faster?) I do know that every other car I ever had - I would grease the pins as normal part of job. I notice that my dealer did not grease them either when they were doing the brakes under maintenance.

I have never had a problem without the grease, but that may be because I am replacing both the bushings & pins new every time I do a brake job.

Next time I do the brakes I will grease the pins just in case
