Mexican Stand Off....

So Gents...

Got a cracked screen - Insured with Admiral - They will not pay for OEM Screen - BMW will not honour AUC warranty with regard to anything they deem has been caused by fitting non OEM screen..

Auto glass will guarantee fitment and quality for as long as I own the car, but in my opinion this is a can of worms waiting to come bite me on the arse...

What makes me laugh is Admiral have a 'modification policy you can purchase that says any part not OEM is covered to a value of £500 or % of market value of car...

The thing is, if car is under 3 years old OEM parts are to be fitted, after that they can fit what ever they want - as its in the Terms & Conditions.

I have even threatened that I could use the legal cover on the policy to counter claim the extra cost for OEM screen under the terms & cond's with regards to uninsured losses... they not having any of it....

Advice please!!!

Sorry to hear that mate. Jammy had similar issue few months ago. Worth of sending him a pm to see what was the outcome of his windscreen claim?

You got no hope with admiral! I complained & even got auto glass to push them to give me a genuine screen.... flat no!

They will only authorise genuine screens, if the car is under 3 years!

The only way you'll get an oem screen is if you pay the difference, which was around £300 (I can't remember the exact quote).

Good luck & let us know if you get any joy!

Mate if they try it on with £300.00 I will have them, Admiral/Autoglass state the only difference is the badge, the quality is the same so they say... I can get the OEM screen with new sensors and the new strip for £392 + and a new new condensation sensor is £ 90.00... That will be good for me if they try that shit....

Will do Mate....

On a plus note, I did get the nice lady (from Admiral) I spoke to tonight to agree to put in writing that they will honour any warranty claim that BMW reject if it is deemed to be due to the windscreen as long as I own the car... lol... I think this will be detracted(not sure that is the right word) by tomorrow morning...

What is the difference between the OEM screen and an aftermarket replacement?

Not being awkward - I don't know and am genuinely interested!

No Idea!!!!

They say it is just that one has a BM Badge, the other does not...

A lot of it is probably corporate bull to be honest, but the point is BMW will not honour warranty on non OEM parts...

IMO insurance is in place so that the insured is not left in a worst position after a claim... If I let them fit a non OEM screen I will be as BMW will not honour the warranty an with this in mind I will be worse off....

Interested in this myself as like Josh mine's pitted but Gen OEM screens ususally have no issues say with things like the rain sensor package as fitted the non OEM screens can prive a tricky customer for the rain sensor as we've discovered on at least one car.....(don't ask me why though just seems that these can prove an issue)

Interesting Steve. I've never had this problem with replacement screens on other cars (non-BMW), I wonder what causes it for our cars!

I think the issue might be that when you get an OEM screen it comes with new sensors I think, pattern ones when fitted use the original sensors fitted to the original screen... they pull them off and stick them back on...

For me this could explain the problem as I would assume these sensors work on some sort of vibration detecting rain drops, if you reuse them there must be a build up of old glue and new glue.. hence detection is reduced...

Not sure but the theory works for me...

Just what I've seen we've had the odd car in with an issue and turns out a compatability issue re screen (650i from memory)customer replaced screen againprobelm sorted... mind you was it down to the fitter of the 1st screenwho knows but I;d heard this issue before not with BMW screen but oddly enough Renault where I once worked where their rain sensor auto light package was very sensitive and OEM screens were always with our dealership for Meganes, Scenic's, Laguna's ordered

ITs a tough one all I can do is state what I understand and my past encounters with Renault's for instance

It's a tough one, who do you believe with regards to quality of a product, no supplier/producer will admit there product is of less quality than there competitor...

The whole thing is a mine field, my priority is maintaining my warranty and if they say they will not cover certain things as a result of what parts I allow to be fitted to the car... It seems we are in a loose/loose situation...

Well this is annoying, I'm in the same boat as you guys with the pitted screen and recently got a small crack and was due to give Admiral a call....

Will give this some more thought.

BMW screens come bare mate no sensors etc.Ive seen replacement non oem screens and they are the same 'saint gobain' just without the BMW emblem underneath. The only issue I've seen in the past is cowboy fitters making a balls of it and then you're carpets full of water.

Their policy is their policy. Why would they bow to your pressure? It's clearly stated in the T&C. Pay the difference or have a non OEM screen fitted.

Nah, it's a light sensor: infrared light is shone into the windshield if the glass is wet less light is reflected back to the sensor.

Garage List
I had mine replaced Autowindscreens in March this year.
NO oem replacements! Fair enough. It just meant that they had to send out a technician 3 times to fit different make screens until I was satisfied!
It was all to do with fitment. The first two screens creaked. The third was fine.
Just don't get fobbed off with "you must have driven it before the sealant cured", "all the screens are made in the same factory" and "they can take up to a week to bed in."
I just stuck to my guns and said that I wanted it sorted. Got there in the end but it was more hassle than it should have been.
