330d to 335d is it worth it?
Hi all, I have a e90 pre lci 330d, its got no Dpf it's remapped and has Wagner intercooler. I personally think it's quick for a diesel. my question is am I silly to consider changing to a 35d? Obviously there is two turbos about the same power I have now but the 35d has more tuning potental overall! I like my torque so diesel is a win for me any day.
Only a few things put me off and that is more people seam to have problems with the 35d. I have had mine almost 2 years done 15k and the engine has been bullet proof, I removed the Dpf before I got any faults with it. I just don't know what to do, I have also considered a e46 m3 but That's a different subject altogether Any advice would probably help me |

My experience of the manual diesels is not good. So much vibration gets sent through the gear stick, it seems like a defect but is apparently normal.
In my opinion, auto is best on the BMW diesels. On the petrols, I'd take the manual. Starting with nothing, I went for the 335d over the 330d and have no regrets. I would recommend others do the same. However if I had a 330d, I don't think the effort and cost of change would be worth the extra which the 335d would provide. Just my opinion! |

I've driven a remapped 330d if your prepared to goto stage as you have on your 335d it's a massive difference, a good 80 bhp and at least 100 torque than what you have now, I get 38mpg on crap roads all day long. Absolutely love my 335d.

Difference b/w two cars is minimal b/w 0-60 mph.
If you do drive on illegal speeds then yes, 335d will give you better acceleration on higher speeds as well. I thought and discussed this before buying 330d. I considered 335i, 335d, 330d, 325d, 320d and 318d. Most forum members suggested for 330d or 335d if I needed diesel. One forum member (v wise and senior) here suggested what I have written above. So 0-60MPH minimam difference along with the fact that 335d has more issue let me go for 330d. You can opt for 335d but then buy low mileage car to avoid any troubles.

A stage 2 or 3 330d does is as fast as a 335d,
But of course that is not compareble since you can also map a 335d or upgrade the FMIC and the turbos. I have a 330dA that is stage3 with no filter, bigger FMIC and hybrid turbo. I get 328Hp and 715Nm from that. I doubt a std 335d is quicker than mine. But a remapped 335d is another story..... The trouble ppl are talking about on the D's is the turbo's, the injectors and the Carbon build up if you don't drive it hard enough. Of course its more expensive to change 2 turbos on the 335d than it is on to change 1 turbo on the 330d. Other than that, same same.....

I'm not disagreeing with you anielsen, just saying that in my limited experience, I haven't heard about these issues ![]() I'd personally be more concerned about things like the red boost pipe, crankcase breather, DPFs, etc.

I had a 330d LCI remapped by DMS. In terms of power I would never have thought of changing for a 335d as the 330d has none of the issues and was as quick if not quicker remapped than a std 335d. My DMS 330d was 305bhp on their RR.
If, however, you want to remap a 335d ... well ![]() |

@Ess
Tak a look at the 335d part of the forum. The guys in the US seems to have A LOT of problems with Carbon build up. The reason for this could be bad diesel quality. I drive my hard some times and I seldom comute without having been in the + side of 200km/h, but thats me... ;-) I haven't had any trouble with the D I haven't asked for myself.

E90 330d 0-60 MPH in 6.8 sec I am comparing 2008 E90 and that 0.6 second becomes insignificant. However 335d has its own merits and demerits and same goes for 330d. If you want nearly same performance as 335d stock without troubles, then 330d will do the job. PS: E92 335d 0-60 MPG is 5.9 secs. Does anybody know why coupe is faster than E90 with the same engine? Are those two additional doors with their windows responsible for the difference or is it coupe's aerodynamic?

I went from my e46 m3 to the 335d, to be honest there wasn't much in it and it's all down to the driver.
The good thing is the 335d can put the power down whenever you want it, if you modify it its in a totally different category. Eliminate the problems like dpf, swirl flaps, egr and the red boost pipe for an uprated one. My swirl flaps are done and i have had the oil breathers, I'll have egr blocked when I remove the dpf. Gear changes are quicker than a manual and when sat in traffic you just rest your foot on the brake a lot better than a manual. |
