New version of injectors for the 335d?

My car is currently in the shop for an injector failure and CBU removal under warranty. The shop finished CBU removal, replaced the injector (and "re-indexed" it?) and put everything back together. On the test drive the car threw the same bad injector code.

Per my SA, the replacement injector was a newer type they didn't know existed and it's not compatible with the other 5 older injectors. So they're going to swap the other 5 with newer versions.

Does anyone have any insight on this? Has BMW finally updated the injector design to deal with these chronic failures?

I highly doubt that it is the injectors that are failing. It almost always turns out being the DDE.

Yep, aware of the DDE and injectors. Not sure why there's a new injector version? Still in the shop, so I'll see if they replace the DDE after all is said and done.

BMW probably got a better deal on them.

It's not unheard of. IIRC the same thing happened with the 335i. BMW has been known to update parts occasionally.

As for the CBU removal under warranty, did the cleaning comprise CLEANING of the intake manifold or did they REPLACE it? Just out of curiosity...

They sent it out for cleaning. It was not done in-house and was not replaced with new.

Yep new injectors on 335i need to be replaced the first time as a complete bank of 3. They prefer to replace all 6.

TadBoy, what dealer are you using? Just curious. I'm in the DC metro area as well.

I just had my CBU cleaning done at Fairfax and they sent out the intake for cleaning. Car is running like it was before but much smoother. Will see how mileage improves as I filled tank today. Usually get 30-31 mpg with city/highway combined. My injectors were never changed and only had mass air flow code which revealed the CBU.

The description was confusing for me. You say bank 1 is "aft forward" and bank 2 is second set. In all my years of being a gear head, a straight six would be cylinders 1 through 6 starting at the forward most cylinder and count upward as you go aft.

Straight forward question: Is bank 1 the forward most three cylinders or aft most three cylinders? if the latter, that is bass ackwards.

You're right. I was mistaken. Bank 1 is front most

Yes iirc the 335d has the piezo ceramic injector while the newer f30 diesels have solenoid ones. Bosch went back to solenoid from the piezo due to reliability.
Big difference between them is the piezo operates 6x per cycle where the new ones are 5x. Less fuel less power more mpg.
Idk if you can used the newer injectors in the 335d. The questions comes down to the pwm duty cycle and current drive.

mofares, which mass air flow code were you getting?

After the mass air flow code, they did the CBU cleaning only, with no mass air flow meter/sensor replacement?

P0101 - Mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance problem
P0087 - Weak fuel pump, clogged filter or screen, restricted fuel supply line
Faulty fuel pump driver module
Faulty fuel pressure sensor

My SES light went away but had to take the car in for DEF warning and that's when the dealer told me it was CBU. Car running much smoother now. I was still getting 31 mpg combined per tank but we shall see what this full tank gets after cleaning CBU going forward .

I'm getting an intermittent P0101 code but it's coming in with a bunch of others. This car had the intake manifold completely replaced about 50k ago.

Since the codes keep coming in randomly, I'm starting to think it's a DDE issue. Maybe I'll bring it by the guys at Fairfax and see what they think.

Just an update. I didn't take it to Fairfax, but two other dealers confirmed it's a CBU issue. I had BMW of Silver Spring complete the CBU work and now they are dealing with some injector codes.

Initially BMW of Sterling said it was CBU and the mass air meter. I don't think the mass air meter is faulty, however.

The injector codes have usually been associated with the DDE. Therefore, you'd need a new DDE.

Due to their ISTA troubleshooting protocols, it tells them to replace injectors, even if they are actually working fine.

Enjoy free new injectors! They are NOT cheap.
