Detailing - A little help to get me started!

Ok so I was inspired by a lot of you guys and how clean your cars are...

I've upped my game with products a technique but some of the deeper marks still remain and it's not gleaming enough yet.

A friend is going to help with his DA and use a cutting compound before going over it again with a polish.

So question is, what compound and polish do you guys use?!

I use meguairs ultimate compound. Bmw paint is quite hard though and it can be a slow process with a DA. I have a rotary which speeds the process up but also increases the risk of damaging something.

I've got Meguiars so tempted to go for some more of that...

Not heard of Menz but will take a look for the future!

As mentioned BMW paint is quite hard, but it’s possible to easily get rid of light abrasion damage with the right combination of cutting compounds and pads.

Before you start polishing prep the car with a clay bar and de-iron. I would use GYEON Q2M CLAY and GYEON Q2M IRON.

Once prepped:

Meguiar's Ultra Cut Compound 105 using Lake Country 140 mm Hydro-Tech Cutting Pads (Aggressive cutting action that will remove deeper scratches, serious swirl marks and heavy oxidation).

Menzerna Super Finish 106FA using Lake Country 140 mm Hydro-Tech Finishing Pads (Light cutting action that will remove marring and faint swirl marks and restore a high gloss finish).

Using the above with a DA is a safe option unlike using a rotary.

Once polished you can use either an expensive carnauba wax for a deep rich look or a lower cost synthetic wax product for a shaper finish.

There is plenty of info online to research techniques for best results.

All of the above can be found on the web site linked in the post above (along with good advice)

Its important to use a good quality sealant after polishing or a synthetic wax like the Collinite range. The common misconception people have is that carnauba waxes protect the paintwork. In general carnauba waxes provide very little protection and are mainly used to provide more gloss to the paint after it has been sealed. So its important to seal the paint with a good sealant or apply a few coats of synthetic wax. Personally I use Collinite 845 and love it. Its cheap, easy to apply, provides excellent protection and deep gloss to the paint and has durability that rivals pretty much any sealant.

Sonax make some great products. Their QD spray is fantastic.

Its a bloody mindfield TBH I've got a Meguiars G220DA which is so easy to use and have used Meguiar's Ultra Cut Compound 105 plus Meguiar's various pads plus other pads on a lighter colour car though I'd say its more difficult to gauge than a darker colour car.

The other cutting compond I've sued is GTechniq's P1 Nanocomposite followed by P2 Hologram Removing polish, which was easier to work with on my Space Grey car. But its a great way of really gettting stuck getting involved doing all this.

GTechniq's stuff isn't that widly known off outside the detailing world but there website's rather useful as is the resources centre, where there is info/downloads available

Scholl products work particularly well on BMW paint. I have used my DA polisher with Scholl on 3 different BMW's and seen better results than with other compounds.
