328d
Had my 335d in for a new DDE and I requested a 328d as a loaner for the day.
Talk about gutless in comparison to the 335d and just did not feel like I was was driving a BMW. Did they miss the mark on it? Was so glad to get back behind the wheel of my car. |

I also think the 328d is targeted towards a different demographic than what the 335d was. However at the same time, a part of that demographic could also very well include some people coming from a 335d. ie. Have gotten older and simply don't want/need the extra power of the 335d. |

GottaBeKD: A possible explanation would be how the transmission works. Being an "intelligent" tranny, it may need either a reset or some spirited driving to be reset for more aggressive shifting.
Did you by any chance try the sport mode on the car? I imagine you did, so the above probably wouldn't apply. PL |

Still feels unpowered and the only savings grace is the close ratio transmission which it goes through gears quickly. When I dropped off the loaner and picked mine I could immediately feel the difference. |

I had a 328d as a loaner and it's a nice car...if you never driven a 335d. You wouldn't know what your missing.
The steering sucks, feels mushy. The slush box shifter harder than I thought it should. The auto stop/start is annoying. I figure it better save me at 15 gal of fuel per year to make it worth it. I estimate that the auto stop will kill this battery in 2 years. For a Volkswagen competitor, it's ok. For it to be a BMW udm, it loses. |

I'm driving a 328d as a loaner now (335d is in the shop) and I took it on a long trip. I have to say it really grows on you. At first I thought it was very plain, but over a long haul (Sacramento to San Diego) it was extremely comfortable and it got 45mpg. Even though it is lightly equipped (no premium or sport pkg) I would call it a very nice car - especially with that fuel economy.
I would not kick one of these out of bed. But it has nowhere near the grunt of my 335d which I will be happy to pick up Monday - carbon cleaned and all. |

Any car that cost 40g plus is going to be a nice car, with that said its still a BMW and it will still be a POS in the long run like the rest of their fleet...but people love BMW's, I'm a diesel fan, I don't care the maker of the car...

I had a 328d loaner for 2 months while my 335d was in the shop.
It definitely grew on me. Before I turned it in I started thinking I might rather have the 328d… Then I got my 335d back and drove off. It only took a couple hundred yards of driving to recall what I was missing! So much better driving. That being said, how many potential BMW buyers have ever driven a 335d? If you don't know what you are missing, the 328d is a fine driving car. It's a fine car anyway, just not a good driving experience when compared to the 335d. |

I drove a base Jetta (2012 or so I believe) as a rental and it was a penalty box. Poor steering, poor ride, etc. Not so the F30 from driving loaners. But this is subjective to each person, and the Jetta TDI 6MT is a fine combination I'm sure.

I'd rather have a Passat TDI, six speed or DSG tranny...

I have had 5 TDI's before my BMW, I love diesels, I don't care who makes it, my car was not ruined in my accident at all engine wise, just need the spiderboot before 2017 because that is when my warranty is up and right now im driving a 335d with the power of a Honda accord, my codes have absolutely nothing to do with my accident, you can put that to rest already...

how come no one has tested the audi tdi or mercs? it seems all of the conversations are centered on bimmers and wagons.
I wasn't interested in a merc and was looking at the audi before i jumped on the 335d. maybe the next one will be the audi. I just can't see getting the 328d or the 535d. |

the audi tdi and the bmw m57 have almost identical specs in hp & torque. The 535d weighs over 1000 lbs more than the 335d. heavier car with the same engine means less performance. |

I just don't understand what happened to your car. Why would you tune it before it getting it fixed from the accident? I know a bunch of people who have the tune running beautifully. |

![]() Audi puts the nice V6 TDI in very expensive sedans, which compared to a BMW tend to be softer. Folks here tend to be more enthusiasts. An A6 TDI to me is the same as a 535d: priced waaay to high for what I want, but if I was going to get one I would get a CPO 535d first as its more fun. No D in the A4. A3 is a Golf based chassis which only had the fugly old gen 5 door for a TDI version. The new A3 sedan should be offered with the 2.0d which is the first time you can sort of compare to a 3 series in the F30 328d. The better comparo would be an A4 TDI but it just isn't in the US cards. I cross shopped new-ish VW TDIs and went with a slightly used 335d for the handling and power advantages. If there was a A3 TDi available at the time, I think that would have been the main comparison: giving up power for a smaller chassis and AWD, and a DSG tranny. In theory. ![]() Benz makes good cars, but just not my style. Too soft. I'm 40ish and very active: I am not their target demo ![]() - b |
