Yes sir

N51 has slightly lower compression than N52 - but gets the 3-stage to supposedly make up for that...

Okay guys, I have a 2012 328i with the N51 engine and I'm fairly certain I don't have a three-stage intake manifold, is there anything visually I can look for to confirm if I have the three-stage manifold?

On the side of the manifold, you'll have a little square box. I think only 3 stages have that.

If you don't have it then you're engine is a N52. ALL N51s come with a 3-stage.

Bingo, there it is! No need to order the three-stage manifold from Turner Motorsports now! I've known for a while that the primary difference between the N51 and the N52 is the compression,10.0:1 compared to 10.7:1. So now it's my understanding the three-stage manifold was added to the N51 to offset the difference in compression. While the N51 and the N52 have the same horsepower rating, I'm wondering if the N51, with the three-stage manifold, might put out a few more horsepower?

Generally an N52 + 3stage manifold puts out more power than an N51 + tune

If you were to do the same mods to both engines (tune, exhaust, headers etc), n52 should end up with more power. Around 15-20

Obviously the N52 with more compression has more upside potential, I was asking the question in a stock configuration.

Do you mean a stock 328 n51 vs 328 n52(no 3 stage)? It's the same.

Yes, I know they are rated the same horsepower wise but do they actually have the same horsepower in reality. It's just a curiosity thought.

Yes they do. BMW does not overrate their engines. Can't tell people a motor produces 230hp (crank) and have it only output 210hp or so, do that and expect to get sued.

But they can under rate the horsepower without legal recourse.

every car BMW produces gets put on a dyno before it leaves manufacturing. There might be some that make more, but ones that make less get sent back. they don't guess and they aren't going to leave that much margin on the table. you don't really think there's enough manufacturing variability for a +20hp margin on a motor BMW makes millions of? I'd be surprised if it were +5hp.

the real variability here is in chassis dynos. you can't take the number off some random dyno as the word of god, especially when lots of places attempt to guess at drivetrain losses and correct (guess) for BHP. if all you want is a number on a dyno plot you can pretty much make that happen..
