Uncleanable windshield help?

I'm hoping someone here can help shed some light on what's going on here. Is this tree pollen, grease/oil, what? Looking at it really closely, it almost looks like it's covered in years of chips...but I don't ever recall having this issue with previous cars.

I've tried window cleaner, degreasers, soap and water, nothing seems to get it clean. I've cleaned it inside and out. There also seems to be streaks whenever I clean it, no matter what I try.

Help?

I have the same problem. I can feel the small dots with my nail so I'm assuming that it's rock chips???

They are all over so I'm not sure how that happened? Can you feel those spots with your nail?

I definitely can in some spots, yea -- even where it looks like it's wiper smear, I can feel it a tiny bit. Unless it's my imagination, idk. Maybe there was a bad run of soft glass or something? I wonder what it would take to get it replaced.

Try and use a razor blade and scrape it across the windsheild using windex as lubrication after that take super fine grade steel wool like 0000 and buff it also with windex only use the steel will once it will rust after that you should be shining if they are rock chips theres not much you can do besides replacing the glass and the OEM glass is know to be very prone to chipping. Best of luck.

go buy a clay bar and use it on the windshield. if you never noticed it before then It's probably specs of sap from a tree and not something permanent like chips.

Then give yer wiper blades a good cleaning too (use a bit of alcohol, not much).

Thanks for the advice, I didn't even know clay bar-ing a windshield was a thing. Do I need to get some special lubricant or anything? Is there a type of clay bar used for windshields specifically?

EDIT: Alright, I ordered some of this stuff http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...uct_refresh_T1

Hoping for the best! Thanks for your help

I'm about to send a similar picture to my insurance carrier to get my window replaced. That morning/afternoon glare make it less than ideal to see, and I might have a (much more expensive) accident.

This was one of my thoughts, too -- if I couldn't get it clean, see if I could talk my insurance company into giving me a new one. The rubber trim around it isn't in the best looking shape anyhow.

I'm looking into dropping thousands on more horsepower mods, but I feel like my 335 is starting to show its age

Do you use your wipers a lot? If so, some of that could be residue that is getting spread from dirty wiper blades all over your window. Like others have said, these windscreens are prone to chipping and scratching from wipers. Try cleaning with Windex or any other glass cleaner of choice, then polish it with a type of all in one polish & sealant. My steps are the same, and it usually comes out looking good, but I use a product my dad use to sell, called Race Glaze Polish & Sealant. This stuff is usually fussy on paint, but on glass it works super good, especially the front window and finishes clear. Just don't get it on the rubber moldings, otherwise it will stain a bit.

bunch of places sell it, you could of scored it at walmart too, comes as a kit, like this one http://www.walmart.com/ip/California...ystem/15137646

you can use soapy water as the lube, but the kits cone with a towel/clay bar/lube. Its the same clay bat as the one u would use for your paint.

But keep in mind, we have pretty shitty windshields so that sort of sand blasted effect can definitely happen. At the very least the clay bar can be used to give it a good cleaning and reduce streaking by making yer wipers glide over the glass properly. I clay twice a year, car and glass.

The rubber trim is NOT part of the glass replacement.

There is a DIY somewhere, but for the hassle factor I took it to the dealer. I had to take it back once within a week for then to re-do it, so I felt that was money well spent.

Any time I've seen a window replaced, the rubber trim has to come out before they can cut the sealant with a knife and get the window out. I hadn't ever considered a DIY for this, though -- thanks for the heads up. Do you remember how much it cost?

IF you are talking the trim part I think, it's just laying on the window and not necessarily removed to get to the window seal. It a "beauty ring" more than a seal.

I think it was about $140, but it's been about 2 years, and memory is the second thing to go.

I can't remember what the first thing is . . .

More than likely, it's sap from being parked under a tree. Happens to mine all the time but I've never had trouble getting it clean. A simple washing is all it takes.

If that doesn't do it, claying will.

that pic sadly looks like "sandblasting" e.g. pitting combined with wiper scratches. Polishing may help but may not.

I second the idea to try a clay bar, also lacquer thinner w/ 0000 steel wool and/or a good scrub with Bon Ami may help, I am kind of particular about windshield cleanliness as well and have done all of those at various points in time to try to get it clean enough not to streak.

Thanks for the advice -- I may give that a go.

I just got back from claybar'ing it -- did absolutely nothing. Definitely picked up some dirt the washing and scrubbing didn't, but it still looks the same. Really looking at it up close, I think you are correct N8N about it being "sandblasting" -- that's basically what it looks like. It's pretty bad though.

I wonder if my insurance company would cover a new windshield.

Let us know what happens next. Mine looks the same, and me living west of the city makes it a safety hazard of sort. I can get it better using sealant (rain-x or other), but it always come back.

Looks to me that is a classic case of pitting which the only solution is to replace the windshield.

Also, it is not OEM and I know for a fact that non-OEM's pit faster than OEM windshields.
