New Battery
Well, after 6 months of labouring with a battery on the way out today I got a new authentic BMW battery. The old one lasted 7+ years which is more you could say for a Marshall or similar... the old battery was throwing loads of errors in the computer but with a new battery the old beast runs much more smoothly.
One annoying thing I noticed first up when the battery started to die was the unreliable keyless entry action. Maybe this is a very early warning sign of a battery on the way out. $494 diagnosed and fitted. |

Did you get this fitted at a dealership?

No, this is my local BMW indie who is fairly pricey but probably not as pricey as the BMW Dealership.
All I can say is don't scrimpt on your BMW - it's a $60-$100k car for good reason. It deserves OEM. |

Mine was 30k, and I wasn't saying you overspent.
It sounded like you got everything genuine BMW I was wondering which dealership in Australia actually charged a reasonable price for such a battery... but of course, no dealership would let you get away with a genuine battery for $494. |

My dealer quoted something crazy like $700 for the battery, then it was extra for installation and coding.... I just bought a bosch S5, and it's been fine for the past 2.5 years and was $150 or so ![]() |

Who has the ability to do this coding? Do you have to resort to the dealership?

![]() If you're using an oem battery I believe you can essentially DIY with a INPA by basically telling the DME you have a new battery (basically you select a register new battery function and that's it) |

You can code for any battery with DIS, or as others have said, code for an identical spec/OEM replacement battery with INPA. DIS allows you to manual input the capacity in Amp hours of the new battery, as well as chemistry (lead acid vs AGM), whereas INPA will assume lead acid with OEM spec (70Ah off the top of my head)

You can buy online but the freight is a killer which is why buying an OEM battery anywhere in Oz is expensive since they're imported from Germany.

You can just buy an equivalent battery, just check aH/CCA/External Venting (or ask the guy at a battery specialist shop). Alternatively OEM is easy to source, their just Bosch batteries. My mates a mechanic and sources them easily (not sure from who but I can ask).
If it's the same spec battery you just have to register it, can be done with K+DCAN Cable ($~20) and BMWLogger (Free). If it's different spec battery, as mentioned previously you have to use AutoLogic (independant workshop would have this) or DIS. To bad your not in WA, could help you out with this. My battery began going flat a few weeks ago. I tried charging it but it would not hold the charge. On the day that I drove it to get it replaced, the engine just turned over enough for it to start but brought up a transmission fault which locked the transmission in 3rd in drive mode. Luckily, it was ok to get to Brisbane Motor Works at Coorparoo who replaced the battery. The replacement is a FIAMM Battery made in Italy. it is 100ahr. The battery plus installation cost $364.
