CBU rears its ugly head

Well it finally got me. This is the reason I bought the extended warranty. I've thrown the following codes:

Fault: Injection quantity control (FMO) / FMO injection quantity observer
- Code: BMW 4674
- Fault: DFC
- Code: BMW 474C
- Fault: Set zero adjustment cylinder 2 injector / Zero Adjust Injector cyclinder 2
- Code: BMW 4AE6

The 4AE6 code has been thrown a couple of times, but I've cleared it to see if it was a soft code or one that would keep coming back. Turns out, it kept coming back.

I bought the car with 49k miles and added the extended warranty right away. I've had 6 injectors replaced and now they're going to do the CBU cleaning. I can't wait to see what this car runs like without all of that sh*t in the head. Now I just have to wait ~1.5 weeks. They gave me a X1 loaner, so I know I'll be ready for the torque sooner rather than later.

Is NC an emissions check state (for diesels that is)? I'm really asking if you are going to block EGR flow path right after cleaning? It is small enough work that i would consider it either way.

Cuda, NC is not an emissions check state for diesel. I'm def going to do the EGR block as soon as I get the car back. I've already got the piece from iaknown. Hopefully the install isn't too bad.

The two dealers I spoke to want over $3000 for the "gold" extended warranty, over $4000 for the "platinum" version from BMW. Its certainly a gamble.

Yes, it's a gamble. I've heard people say that the gamble is not worth it to prevent a $1500.00 CBU cleaning repair.
But, at least in my case (and some others too), my repair bill did not stop at CBU cleaning.

Related repairs for me:
6 injectors=$7000.00
DDE: $1500.00

Unrelated repairs:
SCR tank replaced=$?????
radio replaced=$?????

My guess is that the extended warranty underwriters have lost their shirts on the 335d; even at $4000.00 each.

I paid $2600 for mine and have since had the 6 injectors replaced and now the CBU cleaning. I think mine has more than paid for itself....

Others may not think it's worth it, but I imagine I will see at least one, if not more, SES lights in the next 25k miles.

These are dealer prices. Replacing injectors privately may also be expensive, but likely not so high. If I had to put out $4000 for the warranty vs. $$$ for service without, I would dump the car.... sadly not a very good choice either way.

Was this an "aftermarket" warranty through the dealer? The prices quoted to me are much higher for the BMW sponsored warranty.

The other day, I met with a mechanic who has all of the BG systems (although not the machine to do the induction cleaning on the BMW). In talking with the owner and the BG rep, it was brought to my attention that we only have a few years left on being a non emissions check state. I think they said 2016 for us...this was brought up when I mentioned that I was thinking about blocking the EGR.....I haven't taken the time to confirm it though.

My dealer also had a "gold" plan that cost around $2600. It was not BMW's but an aftermarket policy.

I am "naked and afraid" now being past 50,000 miles as of today. I hope to make it past 100K before I get to use the local BG service etc.

You can have someone code out the check engine light, and no one would know your EGR was blocked.

His EGR monitor will show up as not ready / incomplete, and he will fail the emissions test.

Slightly off topic. I just bought a 2009 with 44K miles on it. I'm comparing extended warranties from Zurich, Assurant and BMW. I'd like to get the one that cover CBU, any suggestions? Thanks.

Mine was the BMW Extended Warranty, not aftermarket. Received the whole BMW Extended Warranty Packet with the extended warranty wallet card. So far it has covered everything and my SA is planning to waive the deductible on this latest service.

Sounds like you got a good deal.

The Savannah BMW dealership doesn't really give attractive pricing on anything in my experience. Now that I'm out of warranty, I'm taking my business elsewhere.

Ditto!

6 injectors, CBU cleaning, Urea Tank and right now i have an SES for EGR cooler and throttle which ive reset like 3 times and its come back maybe the injectors will appear again and i can get a DDE. Either way I got all of my money back in less than the span of two months lol.

I would suggest that the only one likely to cover CBU is OEM. The others will push strong to say it is regular mx.

Hehe, were all in similar boats. My car with 53K miles is currently at the dealer getting the CBU attended to (they've had it over a week now). I have the platinum extended, but believe this is being covered under original warranty. Being in NJ near BMW NA Headquarters, field engineers are taking extra detailed measurements (operating parameters) on my car before and after the cleaning. Hopefully this provides some help with future DDE programming, reduction of CBU and improved/streamlined diagnostics for detecting CBU. Although the only code I got was for an injector, none were replaced. Just the head walnut shell cleaning and replacement of the intake (I thought they now clean and not replace the intake). I hope to get a little more detailed info when I get the car back.

Yes I have X3 6-cyl loaner but I just don't like SUV's, plus I can literally watch the gas gauge drop as I drive it (and that's with what appears to be an over 20 gallon tank).
