Question : aftermarket GPS
hi, guys ... just have a quick question about the aftermarket navigation system.
i order my car couple days ago, i pretty much have all the option except the Navigation package ... so i'm thinking to put on a aftermarket navigation ( either pioneer N3 or N4 ) my question is since the car comes with premium sound system ( logic 7 ) if i want to install the navigation , is that a factor ?? also is the factory sub and amp still work ?? any suggestion for the aftermarket navigation ?? ( i perfer in dash one ) thanks for the help |

its going to be very costly to do an in dash system and it might not work with the logic 7 system properly... also, consider the fact that you might lose resale value if you go overly crazy with the console mods... there are a few options to hardwire an aftermarket gps system. i think that's a much wiser route to go rather than have a an indash which would require you to cut your console up.

I would not go aftermarket for an "in-dash" navi. If its going to be hard wired to your ride, go OEM or bust. Esp given the fact that you have a logic 7 sound system which may present different issues when trying to interface the aftermarket navi to the car's speakers.
My advice would be to use a "portable" navi units like the TomTom or Garmin. I recently got a TomTom unit and love it. It's mounted on the left corner windshield with a suction mount and I ALWAYS remove it when I park! Its small enough to fit in my pocket or glove box. Also, I'm able to switch it between cars and when on vacation or on business, I bring it with me to use on the rental cars. Its been great. |

If you just ordered a couple of days ago...it may be better to call your advisor and see if they can add it to your order before its too late in production.

Personally I like the portable TomTom much better than the BMW iDrive NAV, and it only cost a fracton of the price.

Just bought a nuvi 660 for $400 and am using it on a long road trip. It's great on all expected GPS fronts - and one I never planned on as it was like having radar for all the bends in the dark last night. Plus I can share it with my wife for her car when needed.

IMHO, the in dash Nav is a big waste of money and the extra bump in the dash does not improve the interior "look". Yes, the screen of the in dash unit is bigger, and some think it is neat to have a colored screen in the middle of the dash, but the portable units are big enough and work well. Personally, I really don't need a Nav but I received a TomTom for Xmas. Now all I have to do is to find a need to use it. I don't travel out of my area very often, BUT I can use the TomTom in either of my cars. I could also take it on vacation if I need to rent a car. Can't do that with an in dash unit.

But without the in dash nav, you don't get iDrive either. Some people want iDrive.
Another issue with protable navi's is their portability... for thieves. In my area, they are the #1 smash and grab items from peoples cars. Yes, you can always take it down every time you park the car. But the mount still leaves marks on the windscreen, which are pretty easy to see from the outside. It doesn't take long to look through a center console and glove compartment. |

I have the Garmin Nuvi 650 recently. Works wonder, and it's well sized. I was informed about some special mounts to consider. Go to www.kudausa.com, and check them out. They're built really well, and blend into your specific car's dash. Good luck!

I know the 370 does. Just go to Amazon and check them out, they will tell you.
edit: No, the 660 has maps of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico... |
