Underseat sub upgrade: HiFi to Logic7

Hey guys,

I have the HiFi sound system in my E92 and as good as it is out of the box I fancied wanted a bit more bass, but didn't want to go down the replacement amp and 3rd party sub route yet.

Jammy had some Logic7 subs for sale which are a direct replacement for the HiFi subs (you can swap just the speakers themselves into your existing enclosures if you have pre-LCI car), but I couldn't find much info on whether or not they would be any better performing than what I had already.

I decided to take the plunge and buy them anyway. When they arrived I was a bit sceptical as the look pretty much identical to what was already in there. It took about an hour to swap the subs over, but it's not a tough job as it's all plug & play.

Gave them a good testing on the drive to work this morning and I'm happy as larry! They have so much more punch than the HiFi subs and actually make the seats shake. They're much more compliant at high volumes as well..none of that farting that the HiFi subs used to do when you crank it up

Overall I'd highly recommend the upgrade; it's £125 well spent!

I'm very interested in getting some L7 mids sorted now. Would you be willing the split them matey?

I've registered my interest on a pair in the classifieds at the moment, but as my rears are amped as well thanks to the HiFi setup I'm tempted to do all 4 (cost dependent of course..I've already spent around £2000 on the car in the last couple of months!).

Do you know if they're a straight swap for the HiFi mids?

Are there any tell tale signs to show whether you have L7's installed without physically removing them?

I have (what I assume) is a standard BMW system in mine but the sound quality & bass seems fairly good for standard manufacturer kit but then I've not owned a BMW before so nothing really to compare it against..

They would certainly sell better as a set as a complete upgrade.... unless there is interest when its broken up.

Do you know if they're a straight swap for the HiFi mids?

I'll be in touch! Otherwise keep an eye out on the classified section.

I am about to put up a feeler for a whole load of mods.

Doubt it really... I only noticed main differences from the backs of the speakers

This is a good site to use to help tell what system you have installed from the factory: http://musicarnw.com/start-here-your-car/

If you're trying to find out if somebody has upgraded just the speakers then I don't think there is any way of telling apart from removing the speakers. Chances are though they'd have fitted an amp to go with it, as the HiFi and Logic7 speakers aren't much use without them..the standard stereo doesn't produce enough power to drive them.

Shall I clear some of misunderstanding which you have had? As it will misguide some others. Not that its your intention as you are sharing your positive experience with others.

Although you are very happy but technically you are 'clipping' the subs more which gives you impression that they shake your seats.

Allow me to explain something to you....

Hi-fi subs VS L7, L7 subs can take up to 70W which means they have better coil. Having said that, they can be abused more compared to hi-fi sub.
And that is pretty much what you are doing.

Hi-fi sound system has a limitation and that is hi-fi amp and not the drivers. Amp clips before driver clips as amp has not much to deliver.

Correct way to upgrade hi-fi is to
- Change the amp in your boot to Xd 600/6 by using technics PNP harness.

And you will be amazed to see the results just with standard hi-fi speakers/ underseats.

Now if you are not happy with that sound, then you add L7 subs. And you will be amazed further.

So going back to your findings, bascially L7 subs have better coil and hence more potential to be abused and that is whats going on now.

No harm in doing that. Only drawback is that your perception of 'bass' will be muddled with clipping sound signals. And trust me, I have been there and tested these things with O-scope!

Hey Mak,

Thanks for the informative post (and pissing on my bonfire lol ).

Guess I should take a look at how much the xd600/6 is going to set me back. Just found a DIY for it and it looks like a really simple install

OK so I've sourced myself an XD600/6 so just need a Technical harness..I don't suppose anybody has one laying around do they?! I've contacted Technic directly but not heard back yet.

Negotiated the amp down to £315 delivered from a seller on eBay, who after a chat turned out to be AdamZA on here

We hoped that the wiring harness he had from his old E92 would be suitable but it turns out the Base and HiFi harnesses are different

I've just heard back from Technic on the US forum this morning and purchased one of his HiFi harnesses. It comes with all the power cabling required to plumb it straight into the car which is really nice, you don't even have to disconnect the battery as the power cable has a connector to plug directly into the distribution block on top of the battery.

The only other thing that some people do when fitting the amp is re-use the existing mounting frame which requires some chopping so the amp fits. I've ordered some adhesive velcro strips instead so that the amp is kept attached to the boot floor but is easily removed if required instead. I've also got a roll of adhesive cloth tape to wrap around all the cabling to prevent rattles.

I have a set of Logic7 mids to install in the front as well but will probably do that at the same time as the installing the amp. If it all sounds ok then I'll either buy another set of L7s for the rear or (depending on cost) purchase Adam's BSW speakers in the new year when I can afford them!

Will let you know

I really should do this. The base in my car sucks!
