Top Speed?
Anyone see this on the m5 board.
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/sho...d.php?t=109618 Makes me wonder what our cars would do with the speed limiter disabled? Figure our car is lighter, better aerodynamics, and almost to M5 power (those of us with v2 procedes and JBHR's). What do you guys think? PS - I am not condoning this type of behavior on public roads. But it is damm impressive for a basically stock M5.

Our cars won't get near that, and it's not just down to power/aerodynamics, but also gearing. Unlimited with the gearing and power a tuned 335i will probably top out at around 185mph or so... I've seen 163mph on the autobahn in Germany in mine (measured via a Racelogic Performance Box GPS device), which is stock engine and limiter in place. An Alpina B3 has seen 174mph, which sports 370bhp as standard.

Our cars arent geared that low to get there? So anyone know theoretical top speed for our cars with 6 mt. Still damm impressive 185. Dont plan on ever getting their though.
E92fan, how did you get to 163, is our speedometer that far off? I've hit 151 a couple times, and immediately the limiter kicks in (151 to 153, not exactly sure where it cuts).

It seems that the limiter on my car is quite soft (and is also the case on a friends 5er too) and it let me get to 163mph on the GPS before reigning limiting. The speedo is indicating just about 160mph at this point too. What is interesting is that the car felt like it still wanted to pull... will be investigating a European remap and delimit soon, along with a change to a 200mph speedo..!

e92fan, interesting, maybe european production cars have more relaxed limiters, since you can use it on the autobahn. Keep us posted

There's no reason any sane person would drive their car 200+ mph on a public road like the guy in the M5 did. Not to mention that he's got a passenger beside him, and then takes one hand off the wheel.
Guys like him don't deserve a license (putting flame suit on) |

I know that the Alpina B3 according to edmunds can hit 189mph with only 355crank hp so throw in a Procede with the speed limit delete map and you can prob hit a little more.

Thats what I figured Jon, but supposedly our gearing is what is limiting us.

Lane, I am running Procede V2, and I figure my car is not only lighter than an M5, but also more aerodynamic. If anything I am down maybe 50 hp to an M5.

Speedo is much too optimistic. That M5 did less than 200. Getting to the top speed your hp is below a short dyno run figures due to the heat soak and V2 detuning i.e. "V2 Boost decay" Red line at 6th gear is at higher mph than your top speed. |

Lane, I guess you have a point with weight, didnt stop to think about that, but aerodynamics definitely plays a part, and power is right up there with an M5 in my car. V2 boost decay is not a problem, it takes alot more with the newest map to trigger the decay.
Also according to the thread, a couple other guys using gps hit plus 200 mph. Macdutchski, I dont ever plan on going out to do a 200 mph run, but I can walk outside right now and get hit with a meteor and die too. I think our car can get up close to 190 mph if not more.

At a GPS certified 60 MPH (about 62.5 MPH on the speedo) the 335i is turning 2100 RPM in 6th gear. That means a true 180 MPH is 6300 RPM. The V2 (350 WHP) cars make great HP up to that point but begin to trail off past 6500 RPM. I'd guess top speed would be about 186 MPH at 6500 RPM on the standard rubber.
With slightly taller rubber (say running 275/30/19s, which are about a half-inch taller or about 2% taller than the 255/35/18 run flats) you might be able to go a few extra MPH since the car would remain more in the heart of its powerband for longer. The M5/6 is PERFECTLY geared for top speed running, since it makes peak HP near its 8250 RPM redline. Plus the car may have better aero since it is designed for higher speeds. That is a freakin fast sedan!
