E92 Quaife Diff thunk problem found.. HELP i need Bearings

So my quaife diff went in and the dealership botched the install..

heres the letter i got from Kevin Bird about what they found..

We have stripped your differential and inspected it.
We believe that the bearings have been damaged during dissassembly. It seems that the installer used Fox Wedges or similar to part the bearings from the old differential, as there are visible marks on the old differential. Although it is not entirely clear how such damage could be caused by using this technique, the consequence is that the bearing on one side has overheated. This indicates that something was damaged or some foreign material got into the bearing at some point.

We also noticed that the pinion nut has been used to support the removal of the prop. shaft nut. It is not the correct procedure, and can cause the pinion bearings to become incorrectly loaded. We will examine the position further once we have decided what the repair should be.

We will try to find replacement bearings, but I have to tell you that last time we looked, we couldn't find a supplier!

The alternative would be to supply a complete final drive, which costs £1,014 in the UK.

Sorry this is bad news, but at least the problem is identified.

If your dealer screwed up, let them fix it and buy you a new final drive or find the bearings themselves!

+1 how exactly did you find out there was a problem. What were the symptoms.

I thought clunking was indicative of the diff not be seated right. Wouldnt a bad bearing make something more like a whining sound?

Good Luck getting a dealer to pay for installing 'customer supplied parts'... very hard to do.

Bummer, and Kevin's language doesn't seem to say 100% that the dealer did it... just that they clearly Identified the problem. Sorry to hear!

That BS burns me up.....I had a Volvo in another life that had a fuel injection problem. The towing co. that AAA sent, towed the vehicle on the rear wheels in excess of 75 mph. When the shade tree mechanic looked at the vehicle for the starting problem, he said I had worse problems, my tranny was burnt up, and asked how they towed it, was it on the rear wheels?

Volvo is RWD, it should have been on the fronts, had dollies if the front was lifted, or best, on a flatbed. I fought AAA and they said they're not paying for anything as the tow co. did nothing wrong.

The only thing I could think of was to get even. I called the tow co. directly, said I need a tow back to his garage, and please bring a flatbed. I'm sure they saw $$$ in their eyes. When the flatbed arrived, I said oh, by the way, I have AAA Plus. We're going to Vermont. The driver's eyes lit up like he had something shoved up his you know what. AAA Plus provided free towing up to 100 miles at the time. We rode that flatbed 91 miles to Rutland, and he went back to NYS empty. (I actually had a shop/salvage yard fix everything @ $24/hour with used parts)

This is why my SA had to decline to install mine. He said that there was no source for the bearings or shims. They looked into it pretty thoroughly. Hopefully the situation is better in Euro. I would highly recommend that you pm Brett at KMS.

heh, one more reason to get it installed by Birds... sorry to hear about your problem. I hope U get it fixed soon.
