BMW to appear on watchdog again 30/10/14

So it looks as if the problem with BMW's being stolen so easily is going to be back on Watchdog next week again along with Audi and Range Rover.

Just a heads up, might be quite interesting.

I couldn't sleep well at night knowing this!
Even the misses was worried knowing i would go crazy if anything happened.
I went for a full viper setup and its pretty awesome... Only issue right now is i think its pulling a lot of power from the battery...? But I am trying to figure it out.

Worth checking with your local main dealer. I had my Air con re-gassed in September and BMW Carlisle said they did a free 'security update' on my key. Something along the lines of what's been mentioned here, at the time I just said 'yeah, cheers' but I guess I'm glad they've done it.

Unfortunately that security update will do very little preventing a thief from stealing your car

The programming of keys through the OBD has (supposedly) been fixed on F series cars.

i went into dealer few weeks ago. they said if your car is not built in between march 07 - late 2009 or something they cant steal it. but i am sure ive seen others getting stolen

I got stopped by police last week for speeding...he called for back up immediately, when he pulled me over he said i thought you was going to give us a run for our money cause all of these are getting stolen lately and thought i had stolen one!

I've never understood how other car companies have managed to stay out of the firing line for car thefts, while BMW always get it in the neck.

On other forums numerous of Audis have been stolen. There is a few videos similar to the the very high profile 1M that was broadcast all over the internet.

However so far Audi have kept their name off the TV and as soon as you mention about BMW getting so much bad press for less, even the Audi owners shut up shop and go quiet.

Audi seem to have worse problems than BMW but they've somehow been saved the same exposure for it.

My car has had the security update from the first time around and I'm not worried in the slightest about my car getting stolen. There was blind panic on here before and in all that time my insurance has been going down and down.

My insurance dropped by a fair percentage again this year. I think it was only about £170-180.

It sounds as if my insurance company aren't very worried either.

Just take off the battery lead and shut the boot(if it's a prelci with a key hole on it) if you worry too much. Or just take off a wheel and hide the bolts

Best solution for it move to to a location hard to get to. Cant believe in F30 its still in same easy to reach places. Even Merc mound there's right under the drivers dash so only way to reach it is with open door and then its still a faf but at least more secure

Annoying. Will certainly be moving mine in the F30

The F3* are as vulnerable as the E9* series.
A mixture of traditional disclok, moving your OBD and something like a Blackjax or decent aftermarket alarm is a good call.
Obd locks are quite good-basically a steel case that locks over your obd.
Nothing is safe at the moment-it's just the BMW problem is the most publicised...

there are hundreds/ thousands of bmw around my area let alone the county, my location is not my home area miles away, if someone wants to steal a car there going to steal it no amount of security will stop them, i wish the w@nkers the best of luck using this thread and locating my car to find the added switch and drive off in it

we can go out and get the best alarm currently available or install as many kill switches as we wish. If they want to steal our cars they will, they don't care if they get in or if they can start it up. They plan things well, they know which cable to cut to disable things. A good tow truck driver takes 30 seconds to hook up the vehicle and he do not care if he has the key or not They chop the cars for parts only so it is hard to trace them. The only way to make sure you can really recover if your car gets stolen is to have tracking device installed on its own battery back up and hidden well, and even that who knows if it will work as I am sure they have some scanners already for that
