Automatic wiper adjustment
Does it even do anything my auto wipers are awful they get caught out all the time most annoying is when they are not wiping quick enough and the constant slow option is too much and I have to revert to manual wiping. The scroll on the stalk moves up and down and must be working as when u move it it wipes once immediately after moving so it isn't broken however all the settings seem the exact same? Anyone else have any problems with theirs?

On my second e90 (now LCI) and auto wipers are w@nk on both as with my dads 5 series. The old dears golf auto wipers are very good. Would be interested if they can be sharpened up though, I'm sure I've seen a rain light sensor calibration in inpa or dis??

I've had 2 previous cars with autowipers and here's the answer.
You need to clean the 'eye' (you can see it outside at the top of the windscreen where the plastic 'bubble' is) with Isopropyl Alcohol on a weekly basis at least. Also, clean your wiper rubber blades with some vinegar solution (small amount of water and a splash of vinegar in a tub) using a damp cloth. I know it sounds like a right pain in the rear, but this will cure your wiper issues. Try it out. |

Another tip (which lasts longer that the isopropyl alcohol idea) - clean the screen then apply Rain X or similar rain repellent stuff. Doesn't make them perfect but has certainly improved mine from completely wank to just 'want'. Wish I had normal, manually adjustable intermittent wipe...
Or is you don't like the effect water repellents give, just treat the area where the sensor sits.

I agree that the BMW auto wipers are no way as good as others from VAG, but as suggested the operation can be improved massively by keeping the sensor and wiper blades clean.

Like I said, clean the eye and blades regularly. I don't have auto wipe on my M Sport, but still clean the blades. The difference is unbelievable. If you can be arsed doing it that is, if not, the screen never gets cleaned properly. |

I dont think its all auto wipers. I had a honda for 5 years and never had to touch the settings. They just worked perfectly and never done any special cleaning of sensor. They just work.
My mums lexus is the same, work perfectly without having to apply vinegar or rainx. Only normal washing.Wipers on the 5 series she had before were useless. To me its just another thing to add on the list of faults/poor quality from bmw. Have had vanos problems, abs pump is knackered and just had my evaporator replaced. Bmw are great to drive but just dont think the quality is there. |
