Run flat problem?
This Thursday just gone, the idrive and associated warning systems informed me of a loss in tyre pressure. Checked and sure enough the nearside front was down 8 psi. No visible signs of any nails etc. so pumped tyre back up to correct pressure and re-set run flat monitor on the idrive. Have checked the tyre since and it is loosing approx. 2 psi per day. The tyre pressure system has not alerted me to any further warnings about loss of pressure since. I've checked the whole circumference of the tyre and there are no visible signs of any foreign object having penetrated the tyre.
I am wondering whether it is possible that this leak could be from the bead of the tyre, ie. where it sits on the rim of the wheel? I've done the soapy water test and there is a noticeable 'bubbling' on the rim of the tyre where the tyre bead seats on the wheel rim. I have tyre insurance which I got 'gratis' from the dealer, so I am not concerned if a new tyre is required etc. Anybody heard of this before or have experienced anything similar with a run flat? |

if it's bubbling, that's your leak, BUT strange place for it unless you've slightly dinked your alloy ?

Sounds as though the rubber has somehow deformed - unless you have kerbed your wheel (not to the extreme Carlos has kerbed!)

Hmmm - does sound like either rubber or alloy has been slightly knocked out of shape.

Thanks Guys, I've definately not kerbed the wheel and there's no damage to the alloy. Just checked the tyre under torch light and there is a 'bulge' in the side wall of the tyre where the 'bubbling' is occurring on the rim. You can actually feel the bulge with your fingers and see a slight kink in the tyre rim.
The only thing that springs to mind is about 3 weeks ago in the dark, I drove over an unavoidable patch of frost damage in the road. This was at about 40mph but I 'hit' it square on. I did stop at the time to check the wheel and tyre and they seemed ok. Since then I've checked the tyre pressures and they were also fine. It wasn't until last Thursday that I got the low tyre pressure warning. Whatever has caused the tyre to form this 'bulge' it's going to get replaced, so phone calls to be made tomorrow. |

Thanks Jason, I'm hoping the tyre insurance I have will cover it. Reading the 'small print' it looks quite promising. Just hope whoever the insurance company say I have to use will have a tyre in stock or be able to get one asap.

Abraxas in Bristol do the tyre insurance and the cost for 2 years is £195. They indemnify to cover the cost of repair and replacement of up to a max. of 2 tyres per year and up to a max. aggregate of 4 tyres during the period of insurance. The max. payout on any ONE tyre replacement is £250. I'm pretty sure you can get cheaper tyre insurance that has already been mentioned on the forum, however I got this as part of the deal. The dealer 'lost' the tyre insurance if you know what I mean.

I have often wondered about tyre insurance. Surely you could wait until your tyres are half worn and then 'damage' them yourself some way in order to get new ones?????

Funny you should mention that, apparently that has been known to happen, the rear tyres are worn and lo and behold a screw, nail or other foreign object mysteriously appears in one or if very daring, both tyres, allegedly of course
![]() Anyhow, rang insurance today and they now use Kwik Fit which was handy as there is a branch less than 2 miles down the road from me. Tyre is ordered and should arrive tomorrow, they've had a look at the tyre & it is ok to drive, just don't go mad etc. Insurance will pay for replacement, no problem. |

BB, a tyre with a bulge in the sidwall is not safe to drive, it is a weakness in the tyre, caused by an impact or faulty manufacture - , and you'd only need to hit a deep pothole or flint and could cause the tyre to burst. I would drive very carefully if I were you, and never trust a word that KWIK FIT say they are a bunch of muppets - In fact I cant believe they have said its safe
![]() Sorry my little five pennyworth rant, but KF never cease to amaze me ![]()

Good evening Calvin, I was always calm actually. I have YET to officially rant on this forum. Tolerance must come with being OLD then, along with loosing ones ability to judge distance and size.

Good stuff BB.
Just ask them tomorrow - if the tyre is safe why is it being replaced?? That'll stump them
