335xi oil pan half-shaft seal

So it appears that my oil pan has a leak between the plate where the passenger side half shaft exits and oil pan. It appears to be sealed with some kind of adhesive or RTV compound. In the picture below, its the piece with the green mark on it. Anyone know what this sealant is? I can't find it on any parts diagrams. Thanks.

Did you ever find an answer to question? I've got the same problem on a 2006 530xi wagon. I think I'm going to try Permatex Ultra Grey.

Any oil resistant gasket maker will work.

The o-ring number 7 below is supposed to seal it. I think the RTV is secondary seal. If you open that much replace the o-ring too.
And I highly suggest replacing the shaft seal number 6 there. It may start leaking once disturbed, like removing the axle.

I think I understand better know, there is a bolted on separate plate there other than the axle pedestal, so the RTV sealant is for that. Looks like..

Seeing under my car knowing there was that o-ring, it was always a mystery for me why there was oozing RTV in that joint. It makes sense know. I used to the think oil pan was solid one piece there, which is not apparently.

I still suggest replacing the o-ring, and that axle seal. They will be removed to redo the plate RTV, and they may not like to be disturbed.

its definitely a good point to replace the o-ring and seals. Just need to build the testicular fortitude to do this job

I did this when i replaced my oil pan gasket, which sucks on a xi. Replaced all O Rings and axel seals for the front diff. It was like 30$ for all seals.

The oil pan is two parts. The metal piece that is bolted to the pan also completes the pan. The casting can't be done in one piece due to the complexity of the pan. I used permanent ultra grey to reattach the plate to the pan.

The part diagram shown above number 11 is not the same part that is marked in green in the first post. Part 11 is a bearing pedestal.

The orings part number 7 seal the differential fluid from the outside. There is two number 7 one on each side of the oil pan. There is a hollow tube that runs through the oil pan, differential fluid can not leak into the oil (as the hollow tube is part of the oil pan casting). The axle seals part number 6 above also seal the differential fluid from the outside

Where do I order all the seals from? Part #'s? I'm about to tackle the oil pan. Might as well do it at once.

Get the exact part numbers from www.realoem.com for your vin or year model.
Then online different places to order from:
www.fcpeuro.com
www.ecstuning.com
www.rmeuropean.com
and others, just search.
You can buy from local dealer too, will be more expensive but you will get them immediately if they have in stock, matters if you're pressed on time.
