DISA Preventative maintenance

I have a three stage intake manifold coming for a conversion on my N52- is there anything I should do prior to installation?

I plan on getting new IM gaskets, is there any screw issues or cleaning to do?

Not really. Just make sure it's stiff and tight, and that's all you can do.

is it brand new? if used, you may want to connect the DISAs before installing, start up the engine, give it some rev, and see if they actuate.

Can't you just pull the disa valve out and check before the install and plug in?

Yup.

TIL preventative maintenance is a tirade though. I'd rather not have my engine get grenaded by a $1 plastic flap BMW couldn't be assed to make well, again.

Hah, relax man, I'm just playing. I'm all for preventative maintenance.

Has that issue happened to you once before?

Well known issue on the M54 engine(and pretty much the only issue that can kill that engine). I locked it down with the GAS kit before it happened on my fiance's ZHP. I'm trying to get them to make a similar kit for the N52, which is now getting into the age range where early build dates will fail(and some have already).

Sigh. Just read through all the N52 DISA threads on the interwebs today.

I counted three total failures in all my readings. One guy who lost an engine, one guy who thought he lost an engine and swapped it, but the oringinal engine turned out to be ok, and the third guy who was european, just lost the pivot pin and couldn't find it.

Depressing that BMW can't make a solid DISA. I'll get some pics and vids up of my DISA when they arrive on wed to see what you guys think. Really not wanting to spend a bunch of cash on new DISA's as preventative maintenance, but also not wanting to risk engine damage on something with a low failure rate [so far]

Because every N52 is on the forum.

As I said, we are just starting to get into the age of failures. BMW has a history of problems with this part on other engines, we are starting to see issues with them, and according to GAS who reversed engineered our unit, they are even worse than the M54 ones.

Personally, I'd rather not find out the hard way.

if you do a google search on an N52 disa flap failure you don't really find anything, except this forum. *shrug*

the n52 came out in what, 2005? that was almost 10 years ago. more than adequate time to see if they're going to grenade themselves. so far, it seems like the sky isn't falling.

So it hasn't actually happened to you or your fiance?

What, DISA failure on her M54? No, I replaced it ahead of time as $70 is cheap compared to an engine.

No problems with your N52, though?

Any update from GAS? Or are they still determining if it is worth their while?

They are making it, it's just in queue behind other projects.
