We have options in regards to cbu cleaning.
Was talking shop with a fellow diesel mechanic who does a lot of Mercedes engines with similar gumming issues as our engine and he told me about a product that works well with egr gumming issues. Apparently it works great on gummy vanes for turbos too!
Apparently all the techs in Germany use it. In the north american market its somewhat unheard of. Will talk to my local lubrimoly rep and give it a go in the next couple of weeks.... Give it a try as a chaser after my intake, egr cleaning from last weekend. Interesting. I guess the modus operandi here would be to manually remove EGR and intake, clean them. Then do this spray for the head. I guess after, remove the intake again, scope the head to make sure got cleaned. Wonder how many cans will one need.

That does seem to be an alternative. Not sure if I want all the gunk to go through the engine though.
Do we know when the swirl flaps are opened? If they are closed, the tangential ports won't get cleaned. Definitely cheaper and less work than taking it all apart, sending the intake for ultrasonic cleaning and walnut blasting the ports. |

The gunk gets burned in the engine already.. Not all at the same time mind you. Should not do any damage to the engine, from what I have been told it turns it back into a liquid state and burns off. Thus the increase in speed of the engine and why they tell you short bursts. Will check with my local rep in the next couple of weeks when I see him.
Dont know if I would use it to clean everything but it would sure could come in handy as a chaser after a cleaning and as a preventative maintenance item. I mean the whole reason people use water meth here is to help keep the intake system devoid of exhaust gas gunk and of course a small bump in power. Typically (in general) swirl flaps are closed in the low rpm range, higher rpm they open, just dont know if the 2500 rpm they are asking for when using the product is enough to open the flaps, also dont know if the flaps open from a boost signal. Idling and reving the engine wont really give you boost, you need load on the engine. Last edited by glitdi; 12-07-2014 at 11:16 PM.. Reason: adding info |

I would not call this an alternative but perhaps a good shot of preventative maintenance to do every, or every other oil change. This came up over the summer, and I picked up 4 bottles from IDParts.
It reminds me of doing a top engine clean on a gasser where you slurp it in slowly via a vacuum near the throttle body. In this case its a fine spray and causes the engine to make quite a bit of racket while doing it. Total time about 10m or so with a co-pilot (aka wifey) goosing the throttle a tad to keep revs above 1000. No codes in my case. Did it help? hard to say without scoping before/after but you can see the stuff 'melting' black away at the intake. The charge pipe coming up to the intake was pretty nasty, I think I posted about that one as a known issue or was it just me. - b |

Agreed, it's hard to imagine getting all 12 intake runners cleaned from moderate CBU with this, but as a maintenance item to keep them clean instead of meth that seems to be alright. Mechanical removal (walnut blasting) is definitely my preferred method of doing the intial cleaning.

Just did the treatment at 44K miles. Had six codes and an SES to clear when it was over. Not sure if it will do anything but all I can say is, keep the solvent away from your paint. That stuff is nasty. Burned right through my gloves.

BB has a hair brained idea. I wonder if this will clean out the soot building up in the SCR for those of us that are DPFless. I know of two that have done surgery on their SCR. I'm not wanting to do that atleast not yet due to then having to ward off overboost from an open exhaust. Perhaps a bung would need to be installed immediately upstream of SCR and just plug it with a M18 or M20 depending on what bung is installed. Bung would allow access to spraying into SCR

I'm considering blanking mine when I clean my intake this spring. Are there any disadvantages to doing this?
