Well I bought a new set of CSL's and I am going to sell my stocks. I have already lined up a buyer, so I wanted to clean them up so I can get top dollar. My car has around 30k and I drive shitty maintained back roads to school/gym/work everyday. There are always a lot of pot holes so every week or so they come and fill them in with some asphalt. When you drive over the newly laid asphalt stuff fly’s up everywhere. You can just hear it flinging around.

Over time I have built up a lot of stuff on the inside of my wheel. I could not reach inside the wheel so I had to wait to clean them tell I could get them off the car. So you can imagine what 30k of break dust, stuck on tar and asphalt would look like. (Sorry I missed the pics in this step)

To clean the wheels I used the following process:

Hose down well

Apply CG wheel cleaner (let soak in for 5min or so)

Wash with dish soap (I thought this would help break down the crap on the wheels better than my CG CWG) **After this process I took the pics.. They are the first ones below.. You can see the tar/asphalt just caked and stuck on the wheels. Keep in mind that I scrubbed as hard as possible and this is what they looked like..

To polish the tar/asphalt off I used Mother PowerBall Mini with Mothers Power Metal polish. It turned out that the Mothers polish did not take all of the stuff off, so I started to use 3M rubbing compound. The 3M worked a lot better. I followed the 3M up with the Power Metal polish to get a better shine and to buff it out.

So after 4 long hours you can see the amazing difference. The wheels look like new! Now I can ask top dollar for my wheels and make someone that is looking for a “like new” set of 161's very happy.

I highly recommend the PowerBall Mini! But I think CG wheel wax is a better product over the Mothers wheel polish. I just wanted to use a cheaper product on this set of wheels because I am selling them soon.

agreed. I love my mini power ball for the face of my wheels, but if i was going to do the back I would def. think about getting a full sized one.

Nice work! My winter wheels had similar (actually much worse!) staining, and I took 95% of it out by hand with 3M Rubbing Compound and a s%$^load of effort. That was after trying a number of wheel cleaners and washing several times. It would have been nice to use something like that instead. I'll keep it in mind for next time!

oh, and to the OP, you shouldnt use PowerMetal polish on coated parts of a wheel...its meant for raw metal, these wheels have a clear coat and paint just like your car's body, so you should treat it equally by using a paint polish, not a metal polish. if you had chrome wheels or any other type of exposed metal then i would use a metal polish.

But the magic eraser got me 99% of the way!
These things cleaned my wheels harmlessly like magic!

Those will mar the paint, since most wheels are silver it wont show but under the right light it will. I would use a detailing clay instead, a good aggressive oneI like is sonus gray. Works great on wheels or heavily neglected wheels.
