340 F tempature ?

im looking at 2008 1 series brochure from BMW and there is picture of dashboard in 135i, the oil tempature shows guage with 150F,250F,340F and yes F NOT Celcius. Thats so wierd our top tempature is 300F, our middle temp is 210F, can someone with some knowledge coment on that and tell me why 250 F is normaln temperature for 135i, and 210 F is for 335i, they both have same engines

In most cars, temp gauges are calibrated so that normal operating temps will show up at the half mark (or even less than half). This gives most casual drivers a sense of comfort knowing that the car is running towards the cold side of things. It's always surprised me that the 335's gauge is calibrated so that the needle is on the hot side of things.

In the end, it's the same reading. It's just that one induces a happy feeling while the other makes us go "hmmm"

The 06 and 07 335i models have the lower engine temp gauge. The new 2008 (which I own) goes up to 340. Like shiv said, it is for a peace of mind. Imagine what would happen if car dealers didn't have a "redline". Some idiots would drive ~10 mph back to the dealer and ask what was wrong

I have yet to hit 250 or higher even when tossing the car around on the back roads or frequent runs up to high speed on the Autobahn. I have gotten close but always stays on the left side of 250.

^^+1, I can not make it to touch the 250 either, it always stays a hair to the left of it no matter how hard I drive. Keep in mind I have the oil cooler as well..

i hit 251 racing against a c63, but we were doing like 135 for at least 3 minutes. oil cooler too, BTW.

My 07 335xi (bought in June) has temp gauge to 340 but Shiv is right it never reaches half way (250) and that seems to keep my mind at ease

BMW started with the 160/250/340 oil temp gauge starting with March '07 production. Just so happens that this is when Step and ZSP cars started coming with the second oil cooler.

I hit 260 once but that was some very spirited drivng through the canyons on the 2 going to LACR. Very very fun!

I have the oil cooler too.

My first gauge cluster said 300 now the new one says 340... I feel so much more at ease... Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

so does that mean 250-300 F is perfecly fine for oil? just becouse they change gauge that dosent mean oil life will change.dosent this move sound crazy but what did BMW think" we are runing high oil temps , oh well lets just change numbers on the oil guage" cansomeone here with knwoledge about oils tell us if 300 F is perfecly fine for oil for 15,000 milles?
