What size tires to run on stock 18s for track event?

I heading to VIR for my first ever track day in Feb.

Since Im having one heck of a time finding some cheap track tires and rims on the forums, I may just run different tires on my stock 18s.

I dont want to spend a ton, so after some searching I stumbled upon the Falken Azenis Rt615 http://edgeracing.com/tire/1544/

Honestly, I have no idea how good these are so if you have any experience, please step up.

My real question is, what size tires should I use for a track setup?

I have no personal experience with the tires, but from everything i've read
these are the best dual purpose tires available for the price. There are other tires available from Yokohama and Bridgestone that offer similar performance but are definitely more money. If you plan on track only tires you will putting at the track, there are other tires which are stickier.

I will be ordering a set or Falkens in a couple of months for the summer & track/ club events, i was going to go with 235/40-18 in the front on 18 x 8.5 and 245/40-18 in the rear on 18 x 9.5, you could go with 265/35 -18 in the rear, but i'm worried about rubbing with 22 offset in the rear.

These are going to only be run for track events, and the 1hr drive to/from the track. I have my 19s for every day use. I just didnt want to burn my 19's up or mess up the Iforged wheels, so the 18s seemed a logical choice.

For a first timer, I was advised not to run "track specific (R comps or slicks)" . From what your saying above, this would be an economical step down from that?

The rear fenders are rolled and slightly flared so running a 275 or even larger in the rear shouldnt be an issue...especially on stock wheels.

So I guess the options are;
245-40-18, 275-35-18 ?
235-40-18, 265-35-18 ?

"Tramline", meaning you feel like you are riding on rails? Sorry, I've never heard that terminology to describe a tire.

If your going to switch tires when you get to the event, I would go with "R compound tires", if you're going to drive on them to get to the event I would probably go with either the RT-615's or a Bridgestone RE-01R or the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1. Read the reviews of the Dunlop & Bridgestone at

Tramlining is when your cars follows every groove in the road especially the rain grooves on the freeway.

Internet definition (The term "tramlining" is being used to describe when directional control is disrupted by the vehicle's tendency to follow the longitudinal ruts and/or grooves in the road.)
