E6X 5 series and E9X 3 series gearboxes

I've often wondered whether the E6X 5 series LCI has the same gearbox as the E9X pre LCI. The economy figures for the 5 series differs quite considerably when the pre lci and lci models are compared and the 3l Diesel engine in the LCI seems to be the same as the pre LCI 3 series.

Interested to hear if anyone knows...

Im positive that they are totally different boxes, the father in law has a 535d m sport lci and the auto gear lever is what you now see in the f3x models etc.

But not just the look of it, its so much smoother over my pre lci 320d makes it feel quite lame tbh.

Also not forgetting the 5 is a heavier car so mpg wont be like for like

A 535d will have a much better gearbox than a 320d. I think the E6x 535d and e9x 335d shared the same gearbox. Same engine, roughly same generation of car. The lever is purely a cosmetic upgrade.

The gear lever was another thing I was meant to put to the floor. The lever looks so much better in the LCI 5 series IMHO. I thought that they would be similar given that the engines have the same hp and the 5 has similar but slightly lower economy.

Have a browse: http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/

The E6x facelift included new engines for some models. I think the 535d got a tune too, so probably became more efficient. The basic gearbox was the same I think.
