I have a late production model 2011 BMW 335d Sport with 26,000 miles. Every once and a while when I shut it off the engine fan keeps running. Most of the time it goes off in a minute or so. Sometimes it keeps running for longer. I usually wait 5-10 minutes and just crank the car and then kill it. The fan always stays off when I do that. What kind of issue am I having and should I take it in for a warranty check. Should I just watch it and see how long the fan runs? (dead battery) It is not a real big deal since I am the only driver and I would not let it run all night by mistake. Thanks,

It means you shut the car off during a DPF regen. If you can, get in the car, and drive for 10 minutes or so to let the regen finish.

Suggest you get a monitoring app so you can monitor your car from time to time. Since I started monitoring I don't have any caught off guard regens.

If you are in a regen and parked at least you can idle the car and watch the temps drop and then shut the car off when they are low enough to not trigger the fan.

too hot?

I believe we're making the assumption the fan only runs at DPF regen. That
does not seem reasonable.

Most of the time it will just be a DPF regen. I've monitored my cars coolant temp for around 60k miles and never once seen it go above 215F, and that's during a DPF regen. EGT's reach somewhere in the 1150F range; highway constant speed travel.

I wouldn't discredit a hot engine either, but I believe the car will run into a failsafe mode before that will occur.

I've never timed it how long it lasts, but I am guessing no more than 20 minutes. The batteries in these cars last a long time actually. The regen just starts back up when you drive the car again.
