BE CAREFUL driving in NYC with tints.

So I got a another stupid ticket in NYC. (First one was a red light ticket). I went out to the city saturday night, and a cop pulled me over on 5th ave & 14th street. I never even saw him, all I saw were his sirens on when he rolled up behind me. I had no idea wtf he was pulling me over for, but I rolled down both of my windows and turned on all the lights. He told me to roll up my window a bit and he flashed his light through the window. He said my windows look darker than usual, and that they have been cracking down on tinted cars lately, especially at night and on the weekends. So be careful driving around. I only have 35% tint too, which is pretty light. The ticket was $30. This was actually only my second time getting pulled over, and both were for my tint. (the other time I was in my old car in Chatham.) So I'm just giving you guys a heads up.

But this definitely won't stop me from keeping my tint on.

i am having difficulty understanding why you received a summons with out of STATE registration. he is there to enforce NY law that applied to NY vehicles, and your car being out of state, your tinted windows should be of no concern to him considering the fact that your car is not registered in NY.

for example, PA and a few other states do not have to carry a front plate, which means a PA vehicle driving through NJ may not be bothered for the plate because in its registered STATE he is allowed to take his/her plate off.

now, we all know that tint is illegal in NJ as well, however that is NONE of his concern because he does not enforce the law in NJ

OP..good thing u weren't drinking... i think mabe they are using tints as an excuse to find drunk drivers? mabe they connect tints to younger drivers who come into the city to have a good time...and try to catch them as they are leaving....
i dont know, i just feel that way sometimes....friend of mine once got pulled over for tints, he drives a camry with NO tints...i thought that was odd

it is illegal...although there is a way to get around it. get a note from your family doctor that says that you are sensative to light and therefore you need tinted front windows...never get a ticket again

You really have a good point. Because he pulled me over at 12:45am, and he said they usually pull people over for tints around the club areas. I guess it gives them a reason to check for DUIs.

OP, are you sure its $30? I remember it being a $60 fine for a tint ticket. Maybe you forgot to add the surcharge; $30 fine + $30 surcharge.

They are cracking down on Tints because of Officer Timoshenko who was killed when he didn't see the person in the rear seat(because of tints) who had a .45 pointed at his head.

Don't take it personally, it's a safety issue.

Secondly, even if you have a regged car from Florida which allows tints, you are not allowed to have tints in NY. Just because you are an "outsider" doesn't mean you are immune from the NYS VTL or Penal Law. PA only issues 1 plate and there is a provision in the VTL which gives an exception to drivers from Muni's who only give 1 plate. 2 seperate sections, Registration/Licensing vs Equipment Violations.

Drive Safe.

That's stupid. So, just because NYC does not allow tint and another state does. That means that if you visit NYC, that you either have to remove the tint or be subjected to a fine? I find that hard to believe. It's not like a radar detector where you can put on and take off anytime you want.

Plus, it was a rear passenger window where the cop went up to. All SUV comes tinted in the rear windows.

I feel for the cop that go shot and killed, but I don't agree with the fact that we cannot drive witho our tinted windows from another state into NYC. That just doesn't make sense. That may be the law, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

Again, no disrespect for the fallen officer, my prayers are with him and his family.

they'll often use either a seatbelt check or tint violation to pull over a car to check for DUI. they also tend to pull over more NJ and CT plates around club areas.

sometimes they'll give tint tickets instead of point violations. in my S60R, i got two tint tickets instead of a ticket for 90 in a 50. officer said, your windows are dark, i have to write you for them, have a good night and slow the hell down.

yeah if i am not mistaken there should be a surcharge associated with the ticket in NYC, even if its not a moving violation. NJ i believe is at $54 for tinted vehicle...

furthermore, they are trying to crack down on tinted windows. i heard a while back that they wanted to BUMP up the violation prices to an extreme. couple off hundred bucks if i am not mistaken. not sure how well they are getting through with passing that, since they are concerned with the officers safety, especially at night

when you get pulled over, just roll down all your windows before the officer gets there, it will make the cop feel alot safer and less on edge and hopefully he won't catch your tint unless thats why he pulled you over.

yes, that amongst turning your interior lights on, having your paper work ready, keeping your hands on the steering wheel and ofcourse complete cooperation
