California Smog with Tune
Hey all, I tried searching and most of the threads were regarding downpipes. I gotta smog by 1/25/15 and have a buddy mechanic that ran my car (FBO) and it didnt pass obviously. I then swapped out the downpipes (PITA) and went back to a different shop (buddy's shop was closed) and the computer "could not communicate" to complete the SMOG.
Is this because of my JB4 tune? I'm on Map 5 with e40, I never went to map 0 because I have ethanol in my tank. Would a tune cause a smog check to fail? Any other mods cause this?

Don't they just hook up ODBII to read? If so, a mod won't do anything there unless you cut some wires. Does your cig lighter work? If not check for a fuse

Had the same issue last year, I ended up removing my jb4 and the smog shop was able to communicate without any issues after the removal. But even in map 0, smog shop could not connect. You can try setting jb4 to map 0 for a few days and it may do the trick.

Many times the cig lighter and OBDII are on the same circuit. I found this out when I had a SES light come on, but couldn't read the code. My ODBII tool would not even recognize the car, so I had to take it in to a local shop. Guy hooked his up, same, so he asked if my lighter worked. . .
GMC truck, but he said it was a common issue across the auto industry. |

Just had mine smogged in Milpitas. The guy said to remove the tune(return to stock) and remove my DCI. He then checked underneath for cats which I retained never removed. Then it passed.
Good luck, CA smog laws suck. |

I just passed! I ended up driving 180 miles with stock downpipes (last 30 miles were on Map 0 with the JB4 tune which I never removed). Thanks for all the feedback, time to put the aftermarket downpipes back on.

I just did a car smog today on my car also. Literally put the JB4 to map 0 when I pulled in to the smog shop. I passed, no sniffer test.

So you went to one of the new(er) test stations that run primarily the ODBII. Not sure when that is the required choice, a few still do the inspection and then tailpipe test only.

So is it selective for sniffer test or its now the norm to just do OBD2 only, like all the other 48 states... I'm curious cuz some day i'll come back to cali if they drop some of those stupid rules and join the main stream.
