Extended Warranty or EGR block and tune out

I am debating buying an extended warranty later this year, don't really want to drop $3K on one, but I really like the car and want to keep it for a long time. I am worried about the CBU issues and the components that due fail asa a result. What do you guys think about getting a tune and coding out EGR and installing blocker plates, vs buying the warranty? I have a 2011 with about 35K miles and JBD, no issues at all so far.

I would like to know the same thing as well. I'm actually more concerned with the $$$ for SCR/DEF sensors, etc long term.

CBU I think is pretty manageable at the point. I'm still under warranty right now so I'm probably just going to do Amsoil Cetane Boost/Amsoil Fuel Injector cleaner with each tank and maybe a catch can. That will help. Then out of warranty I'll do Meth, block EGR, and a DIY clean of CBU if it doesn't happen under warranty.

There is a DIY for CBU on this forum. Doesn't look too bad to do. I'm treating it as 50K maintenance. I might even do it while I'm still under warranty just because I like weird challenges like that.

Both? You can do an EGR block without tune for about $0.50 worth of thin steel.

Is it just one port that needs blocking or two? I think I read somewhere that it's actually two ports that need to blocked?

Also, any potential harm from blocking EGR? Edit: Meaning actual mechanical harm. Not just SES.

Only one port at the minimum on a 335d. The x5d has two. You can install two blocks on the 335 to protect the EGR cooler if you're concerned it may crack. I've been running just one for almost 40k miles now with no issues other than resetting the SES every start. If the right opportunity came along for me to block the lower and pull the cooler I would jump on it just for a bit of added confidence.

Can someone explain the procedure for clearing a code as a result of the EGR valve being blocked -- I have an Android phone and the WMWhat app. Also, if I have a day of buying groceries and takign the kids to soccer and don't clear the code until the end of the day is that going to be a problem? Thanks in advance.

Why does the EGR need to be blocked with a steel plate vs simply unplugging the EGR cable? It is by default closed, and only opened by the electric motor when needed.

Why not? No harm in blocking the EGR without a tune. Car runs great with it blocked. However you do get the check engine light.

Make sure you use a piece of stainless steel when you block of the egr, I have seen plates melt through from the hot exhaust gases. 20 gauge ish should be about right from what I remember off the top of my head.

That's not correct. You can block the flow without getting limp mode even with stock programming (you will get the SES light on your 2nd key cycle if you don't reset it each time). If you unplug the electrical connector you will get the 1/2 engine light and limp mode with stock programming.

Lenny has had the EGR/DPF/SCR coded out before JR but NO one dared(even me, cause we had NO dpf pipe) and he didnt publisized it cause EPA gave him a call.

Tdy sorry about the misunderstanding but I beleived it went limp mode with the egr blocked but I guess Im corrected gracias

JR has been very fortunate to have guinea Pigs and i commend this for him. But Lenny had guys say ok and bail out i would of done it but i lived in the island, but now thanks to Tdi info Iaknowns plugsa and jes's dpipe Im clean and driving like a bat out of hell LOL!!!

WOW!

So much conflicting info.

For those people who are considering the EGR block, how will we deal with the
subsequent check engine illumination?

Is that what the recode is all about?

What about after visiting the dealer and getting a recode there?

That'll require an additional recode won't it?

...and what about dealer detection of the EGR block?

CANtool, torque app, bmwhat app, etc

yes and no. A good recode gets rid of the EGR function entirely. A not as good one just keeps the light off.

Either dont go to the dealer, or dont let them flash the dde

If they flash the dde, which is not something that theyre going to just do during an oil change.

If youre there for something theyre going to be looking around the engine for, take the block out before you go. Either that, or just dont go to the dealer. The simple block like I am using would take me about a half hour to reverse, less if nothing gives me trouble.

Last time you posted logs of your EGR read out from the scanner it looked like the EGR was still functioning. Doesnt seem like he had it all figured out a year and a half ago if he didnt have it figured out two months ago.

While on this topic, and I apologize if this has been covered already, but if a tune is capable of setting the EGR to 0% duty cycle, all the time, is there any additional effectiveness with EGR reduction in having the EGR physically blocked off, with plates?

Edited to add: This has been discussed before, here:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...2&postcount=85

To summarize the post, it is recommended that both be performed as the physical block off will help prevent potential cooler cracking issues.

I've gotten 3 SES lights in the two months I've owned the 335D, and I am tired of dealing with it. All of this information is good information, however I need to get a scan tool...
