engine ticking

Another engine ticking post...

Hi all, first post, been a long time lurker though.

My vehicle is a 2009 335i E90 with sport package. Has about 63,000 miles. Its my everyday car, my only car. Bought it CPO with 30,000 miles back in 2011.

A while ago I noticed a metallic ticking noise from the engine bay during cold start ups. Took it to the dealer couple months ago and was told it was normal engine noise and they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. But with my CPO warranty expiring at the end of the month I thought I give it another shot with the dealer and recorded a video of the noise. The SA says its the lifters, so basically normal engine noise. But what's odd is that the ticking doesn't start when the engine starts, it starts about a minute or so after the engine has been running.

The first video shows a noticeable fast ticking noise starting around 1:40. The second video shows the ticking noise with the hood open, its more apparent on the driver side.

What do you guys think? If its the lifters, I can live with that. Just doesn't sound normal.

My car sounds exactly the same as yours.

It come and goes. Sounds like its coming from the alternator area on my car.

For me its pretty normal

Yes it comes and goes.
Its not lifters.....that is a n52 known issue not n54.
Also.....it you notice.....it is the return feed from the fuel tank charcoal canister to the engine to burn off poluttents.(spelling?)

I was told this a while back by a shop foreman of a dealership.....he spent 2 hours with me...lol.

If you disconnect the blue air line coming from behind left shock tower to behind OFH ..... Your ticking might go away.....but you may get a CEL also....
Part of the evap system.

Happens on all the engines- doesn't matter what configuration it's happened on my 328 coupe, and it happens on my 2011 335 convertible.

The solution is to get a super loud intake or exhaust

Thanks for the input. Got the car back from the dealer and this was what they found.

ALTERNATOR HISSING
CHECKED ALL CHARGE AIR PIPES, NO LEAKS FOUND, SMOKE TESTED INTAKE AND VALVE COVER, NO LEAKS FOUND, REMOVED DRIVE BELT FOUND NOISE GONE, FOUND ALTERNATOR HISSING, CUSTOMER DELINED REPAIRS

SA quoted $1400 for the alternator replacement, he advised to decline the repair. CPO wouldn't cover the replacement since the alternator was still working, but if it did break CPO would cover the cost.

They did end up finding the oil filter housing was leaking, so got that repaired with CPO.
